TABARRUJ: A SIN THAT HAS BECOME NORMALIZED IN SOCIETY
Tabarruj refers to a woman displaying her beauty, adornment, or attractiveness in a manner that Islam has prohibited when appearing before non-mahram men.
One of the serious problems in our society today is that certain forms of tabarruj have become so widespread that they are no longer viewed as sinful. What was once considered shameful can now be presented as fashion, confidence, or modernity.
Examples can include:
โข Wearing clothing that is revealing, tight, transparent, or designed to attract attention.
โข Deliberately displaying oneโs beauty and adornment before non-mahram men.
โข Wearing perfume in a way that causes oneโs fragrance to attract the attention of non-mahram men.
โข Wearing hairstyles, extensions, or adornments specifically to display beauty publicly in a manner contrary to Islamic modesty.
โข Posting pictures and videos online in which oneโs beauty and adornment are deliberately displayed to non-mahram men.
โข Dressing modestly in some respects while deliberately emphasizing parts of the body or physical appearance in others.
โข Turning social media into a platform for constantly displaying beauty, clothing, jewellery, makeup, and physical appearance for public attention.
Allah ๏ทป says:
ููููุง ุชูุจูุฑููุฌููู ุชูุจูุฑููุฌู ุงููุฌูุงูููููููุฉู ุงููุฃููููููฐ
โDo not display yourselves as was the display of the former days of ignorance.โ
โ Qurโan 33:33
Modesty in Islam is not about preventing a woman from looking beautiful or taking care of herself. Rather, Islam teaches that beauty has its proper place and boundaries. A woman can dress beautifully for her husband, family, and women, while observing the limits prescribed by Allah when appearing before non-mahram men.
The danger begins when society changes our understanding of what is acceptable. When thousands of people do something, we may eventually stop asking whether it is pleasing to Allah.
A sin does not become halal because it becomes fashionable.
May Allah grant our women and men genuine haya, protect our hearts from the influence of society, and make us among those who follow His guidance even when it goes against popular culture. Ameen.
