Paul writes this epistle from the jail cells, yet his mind is sharp and focused. In the preceding verse, he mentions the immoral acts of our flesh, which are sins of sexual immorality, impurity, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition and drunkenness.

Our flesh is what contains our human desires, and as verse 17 says, this is what is contrary to the Spirit; therefore, when we are in the flesh, we cannot be in the Spirit and will be held by the law.

However, when we are in the Spirit, then we are free
from the law.

To fully live in the Spirit is to experience all of the fruits of the Spirit. The Greek word for fruit is ‘Karpos’, meaning the result of something, and thus the fruits of the Spirit in our lives are the result of being led by the Spirit.

It is also the result of the tree itself (who is the Spirit and actually God) and has nothing to do with us, who, as fruit, are a result of the tree. We must choose the tree of eternal life in Christ to be able to have his fruit.

Paul lists nine character qualities that should be evident in someone's life if they're walking according to God's ways. They are:
Love
Joy
Peace
Patience
Kindness
Goodness
Faithfulness
Gentleness
Self-Control

Just like the fruit of a tree isn't meant for the tree itself, but for others, so also the fruit of the Spirit in a Christian's life is not meant for themselves, but for others.
