Publicly release the ethics opinions, detailed funding breakdown (how much each sponsor contributed and what they received in return), recusals from any related regulatory matters, and time logs showing this didn’t detract from core DOT responsibilities (air traffic modernization, safety, infrastructure delivery, etc.).

An independent review or IG summary could put the issue to rest.

America can celebrate its 250th without turning it into reality-TV style content starring the Transportation Secretary. The message is good; the execution and potential conflicts deserve scrutiny. Focus on delivering results at DOT first — safer skies, better roads, efficient travel — and the patriotic messaging will land more credibly.

That’s not “radical left” criticism. That’s basic good-government prudence.

Secretary, have you forgotten that you serve all Americans? You would have been outraged if @SecretaryPete had used his official US government account to insult tens of millions of Americans by referring to a “radical, miserable right” and dismissing the citizens of engaging in the criticism and dissent that is part of our patriotic birthright as “haters” — and justly so.

By all means, use social media & press conference to correct the record about how and where your official office or government resources — our taxpayer dollars — have or have not been used or misused for personal gain or profit.

But stop abusing entrusted power by engaging in rank partisan attacks using your official account, which should be nonpartisan and evidence-based.

Doing so isn’t just about avoiding sanction from @US_OSC for potentially violating the Hatch Act: it’s about showing equal respect to all Americans, including those who didn’t vote for this President or didn’t vote at all.

The left is not a monolith, and your claims about why people objected to your trailer are not true of most of the people who criticized it.

It would be nice if the Sec of Transportation would try listening to and understanding Americans rather than assuming that if they have a criticism, it therefore means that they hate America and are against joy.

Do you genuinely believe that criticism of your reality tv show is tantamount to hatred for America? Do you not see the problem with that reasoning?

As so many of the critics explained, for many Americans the aversion to the video advertising your reality tv show has to do with what appears to be your lack of awareness about or indifference to the fact that so many Americans right now are deeply worried about how to pay for gas, groceries, and health care.

Your video implies that everyone can and should take off for trips to visit nat’l parks. More than half of the population reports that their financial situation is a major cause of concern. Among the biggest sources of worry are the costs of gas and transportation.

I don’t think that you or your family are trying to rub it in Americans’ faces that you are fortunate and can afford trips to national parks, but do you not see why the trailer might be offensive to people when so many people cannot afford to do what you’re doing?

As for how it is being funded, I’m very happy to hear that it’s not by taxpayers. However, even if your ethics advisers within the dept of transportation said it was okay, many people do not consider it ethical that you are receiving benefits from companies over which you have regulatory power.

A number of reports have come out raising questions about that—and not just in relation to this family reality show.

I don’t begrudge you or your family joy —at all—and most Americans love America
deeply (even if we recognize that its history includes dark and shameful chapters).

Some of us also happen to think that with all that is going on right now in the world and with Americans’ financial struggles, it would perhaps be better if you refrained from advertising your good fortune and addressed the fact that most Americans cannot afford the kind of family trips that you can.
