KAGAMI+ Featured Work Introduction ❶
Ryuichi Sakamoto + Shiro Takatani: TIME, TIME
Based on the theatrical piece TIME which premiered at the Holland Festival (Amsterdam, Netherlands) in 2021. In TIME, Sakamoto develops the 'asynchronicity' he explored in his album async and presents the question 'What is time?' through an expression that can be called a musical drama influenced by Noh.
Inspired by Soseki Natsume's Ten Nights of Dreams (First Night), the Noh play Kantan, and Zhuangzi's Butterfly Dream, this attempt interweaves moments and eternity, brief slumbers, and the hundred years within dreams, challenging the very concepts of time and existence. Also depicted is the symbolic struggle of humans pushing themselves to exhaustion against overwhelming forces of nature.
This theatrical piece and installation were originally conceived as inseparable entities.
In TIME, TIME, 'water,' serves as the stage, a substance that has held deep significance in Sakamoto’s work.
The piece combines newly shot footage by Takatani, featuring Mayumi Miyata playing the sho, with images of Min Tanaka from TIME. The performance is structured on three screens to present the three elements from TIME: 'Creating a Path,' Kantan, and Ten Nights of Dreams.
Sakamoto's music flows freely between these elements, creating a dreamlike world without beginning or end that transcends time and space, quietly expanding before the audience.
Exhibition viewing is included with both RED TICKET and BLUE TICKET.
