Launched in 1860, HMS Warrior was the pride of Queen Victoria’s fleet. Powered by steam and sail, she was the largest, fastest and most powerful ship of her day
As a mark of respect, all our sites will be closed to visitors tomorrow as we join the rest of the country and the world in reflecting on Her Majesty The Queen's incredible contribution and enduring legacy.
A message from our Chairman and Director General:
@LynnBry29527024 We can confirm that Lynn, we're terribly sorry for the language he's using! 😉 He's just very passionate about history. We'll have a word... 🐥
#OnThisDay 1861 HMS Warrior was commissioned - 161 years ago. She was one of the world’s most heavily armoured and largest warships ever constructed. Her innovative design sparked a naval arms race which saw her become outdated and decommissioned in 1883.

@JohnFerris62@WarshipCam@HMNBPortsmouth@NavyLookout Hi John, We're sorry-Portsmouth Historic Dockyard & the surrounding area is an active naval base, we are there by permission of the Royal Navy. As a result we're not always able to show full ships movements for many different reasons & sometimes it's difficult for us to explain.
We're sharing big news on #NationalArchives day... the National Museum of the Royal Navy is opening the new Collections Access Service at its museums in Portsmouth and Yeovilton!
