Currently, there could be a £3,000 a year disparity between young families posted to Scotland/Wales compared to their peers in England due to the differences in government funded childcare with the mainland devolved nations.
This could expand to £6,000 per child, per year, come September 2025 when funded childcare increases to 30 hours per week, per child from 9 months old onwards.
Seeing as this childcare entitlement is mirrored for those posted overseas, why is this not the case for those posted to the devolved nations?
Where is the incentive to take a posting in Scotland or Wales if the family is going to be thousands of pounds worse off each year compared to their peers in England?
Is this not in part a recruitment, retention and even an incentivisation problem?
This was raised to my attention by a serving soldier posted in Scotland. His wife has done the research, put the work in and has wrote a letter to their local MP to highlight this huge disparity.
With their permission, I am sharing the letter here to raise awareness of this. I hope it sparks some discussion with the aim to rectify, what I and many others, see as a big issue.
