I may not always see eye to eye with Bang PD, BigHit, and eventually HYBE, but one thing that I have admired from the start, is that the company has remained consistent from the start is their focus on the human inside the artist.

Very early on, Bang PD made a deliberate decision to create a company that nurtured individuality rather than treating idols as disposable products. This ethos was rooted in BigHit’s original slogan, “Music and Artist for Healing.” He wanted to challenge the toxic norms of an industry that often saw idols as commodities, discarded when they were no longer seen as profitable. We still see this happening with the not-so-“Big 3.”

One of the most significant aspects of BTS's journey is the freedom of creation and expression they were given, especially at a time when other labels kept their artists under strict control—even to the point of not allowing them to own mobile phones and limiting their contact with loved ones, supposedly to help these trainees “stay focused.” BTS not only wrote their own lyrics and took part in producing their songs but also openly shared their thoughts and struggles, breaking away from the overly manufactured image typical of idol groups of their time. This creative independence wasn’t just rare; it was revolutionary.

BigHit was also pioneering in the entertainment industry for prioritizing the mental well-being of their artists. They were the first company in Korea to establish in-house mental health care services available to both artists and staff, with the cost covered by the company. This care structure has been invaluable to BTS, allowing them to navigate their overwhelming global success while staying grounded and authentic.

Additionally, BTS’s openness about their struggles with mental health—from Jin’s heartfelt track ABYSS, Yoongi’s raw and honest lyrics about his struggles with depression in much of his solo discography, Hobi’s introspective and uplifting themes in HOPE WORLD and JACK IN THE BOX, Namjoon’s reflections on the pressure of leadership, Jimin’s deeply personal FACE album, Tae’s poignant original composition BLUE AND GREY, and Jungkook’s unpublished yet haunting DECALCOMANIA—has not only helped countless ARMY feel seen and supported but also shifted public perception within Korea. Instead of hiding their challenges, they confronted them head-on, fostering a culture of openness that was once considered a sign of weakness and therefore taboo.

The focus on authenticity and healing through their craft didn’t just shape BTS’s humility throughout their astronomical success—it also changed the way Korean idols are perceived in general, paving the way for a more humane and respectful approach to artist management.
