In a landmark challenge to the tech giant’s military ambitions, hundreds of workers at Google’s elite artificial intelligence division have voted to unionize over the use of their technology in Israeli and US military operations. Represented by the Communication Workers Union and Unite, the London-based staff are demanding an immediate halt to AI projects aiding Israel’s genocide in Gaza and US-Israeli attacks on Iran. The move represents the first major unionization effort at a global "frontier AI" lab, with 98 percent of participating members backing the drive to regain ethical control over their research.

The unionization bid seeks to restore scrapped pledges against the development of autonomous weaponry and surveillance tools while establishing a formal right for researchers to conscientiously object to projects. Workers have warned that Google’s AI models are currently complicit in violations of international law, arguing that even administrative applications of the technology serve to make the genocide of Palestinians more efficient. Beyond official recognition, staff are weighing further escalations including "research strikes" to prevent their innovations from being funneled into the military-industrial complex.

This internal revolt follows years of escalating tension within Google, including the firing of dozens of employees who protested Project Nimbus, a massive cloud computing contract with the Israeli government. Organizers describe the union drive as a pivotal act of solidarity with oppressed communities worldwide, positioning tech workers as a frontline defense against the weaponization of advanced algorithms.

The most basic things we need to live a decent life are completely unaffordable. Housing, decent healthcare, utilities, and even food has become so expensive that it’s next to impossible for working people to make ends meet. Meanwhile, corporations are making record profits and the billionaire class gets richer every day.

The politicians want us to think there’s nothing they can do about it, but that’s a lie.

An emergency price freeze could stop the inflation crisis in its tracks. Universal healthcare would eliminate the predatory insurance companies that squeeze working people while providing inadequate care. Removing the unfair obstacles workers face when organizing a union would raise incomes and address inflation on the other end.

May Day is our chance to shut it down and demand these measures and more that put the working class over the billionaire class.

Today’s airstrikes in Qatar make it clear: Assassination is one of Trump’s favorite foreign policy tools. It is unthinkable that the Trump administration was not involved in the Israeli airstrikes today that aimed to kill Palestinian negotiators based in Qatar – a country that houses one of the largest U.S. airbases in the world. 

Last week, Trump murdered 11 Venezuelans and declared he had the right to kill anyone in international waters who he accuses of being involved in drug smuggling. And Trump may attempt to assassinate the country’s president Nicolás Maduro next.

In June, Trump threatened to assassinate the leader of Iran. And in his first term in office, Trump nearly set off a catastrophic war across the Middle East by assassinating top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani. 

This is a lawless president in charge of a lawless empire. Nothing about Trump’s assassination spree makes the people of the United States safer – it only threatens to start new wars where working people die and corporations profit.
