After South Korea's parliament voted against martial law, the military backed off. Hopefully, the military will continue to recognize the rightful end to martial law. I believe its also likely a presidential impeachment is right around the corner.
Ultimately, this debacle is an example of the importance of the balance of power between the branches of government, and the importance of loyalty to the nation and the rule of law over party/political affiliation/political patronage. If the president's allies held the parliament or if his party blindly supported him, then martial law would have continued. The Philippines can learn a lot from this incident.
The South Korean timeline of events tonight:
10PM: Martial law declared
12AM: Protestors show up
12:10AM: Assembly votes to lift martial law
1AM: Assembly refuses to leave
4AM: President promises to comply
4:15AM: President complies
With swift action, South Koreans saved their democracy.
Take note, Americans.
