@sjfdewsbury participating in last night’s Ceremony at the Menin Gate. Thank you to @lastpostieper for the opportunity to lay a wreath and especially for allowing me the honour to read the Exhortation @HoltsTours
@sjfdewsbury@andrewthornto20 It has been an absolute pleasure to arrange this tour for your students, and so wonderful to see all their experiences here!
Concluding my posts about @sjfdewsbury battlefield experience with Lucas. His GG Uncle killed by a sniper whilst collecting water lies in Talana Farm. Another GG Uncle survived and received the VC https://t.co/w2Us9ADgyn @HoltsTours@sommecourt
One of the many rewards of battlefield guiding include reuniting families of the Fallen. We have had many examples on this trip and when coupled with prayers and acts of Remembrance from @sjfdewsbury it is truly humbling @HoltsTours@sommecourt
A pleasant walk around ‘Plugstreet’ Wood for stories of the doomed love affair of Roland Leighton & Vera Britain, the wartime role of future PM Anthony Eden, & the heart-rending tragedy of boy soldiers’ deaths. @kingschester@HoltsTours
Visiting Langemark German Cemetery always raises questions from pupils, and our group this time was no exception. Our pupils showed great interest and asked very thoughtful questions. @kingschester@HoltsTours
We began our day yesterday at @CWGC Prowse Point Military Cemetery, which looked beautiful in the golden autumn light of early morning. A design masterpiece by W H Cowlishaw. @kingschester@HoltsTours
At Hill 60 we learned, among other things, about underground warfare, the first Territorial VC & the make-up of a division. The psychological impact of mine warfare was brought home by the words of Max Beckmann & E A Mackintosh. @kingschester@HoltsTours
Asking pupils for their stand-out moment on this battlefields tour, many have said the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate, when we remembered the Missing ‘to whom the fortune of war denied the known & honoured burial given to their comrades in death’. @kingschester@HoltsTours
Among the many graves and the many names on the memorial at @CWGC Tyne Cot are two OKS, L/Cpl Alfred Robinson & Capt Colin Laird. We also heard about the bravery of Sgt Lewis McGee, among other tales. @kingschester@HoltsTours
Yesterday, Hooge Crater Café-Museum provided us with a delicious lunch & fascinating museum artefacts, one of which inspired Mr Downey to yet another artistic wonder. @kingschester@HoltsTours
Torchlit Act of Remembrance at 49 West Riding Division Memorial provides a fitting conclusion to @sjfdewsbury Western Front Tour with @HoltsTours A moving week with lots of special moments for students. A privilege to guide them. @sommecourt
We began our last day on this battlefields tour behind the lines in Poperinge at the New Cemetery, where we heard tales of nurses and those who were ‘shot at dawn’. @kingschester@HoltsTours
Thanks to the wardens, staff & especially Simon (or should we say Pte Arthur Pettifer) for a really engaging, informative, humorous yet poignant tour of @TalbotHousTubby today. We really enjoyed our visit. It was wonderful & fitting end to our tour. @kingschester@HoltsTours
