When a brand becomes the default word for an entire category, you've achieved something most companies never will.
Think about it.
How many times have you said:
"Order an Uber."
...when you actually meant Bolt, inDrive or another ride-hailing app?
That's one of the strongest indicators of brand equity. A company's name becomes part of everyday language.
With Uber's reported exit from Nigeria, many conversations have focused on market competition and business strategy.
But another question is worth asking:
Can a company leave a market and still own a place in people's minds?
That's the kind of business conversation that fascinates us at Talks About You.
Behind every headline is a lesson about branding, customer perception, innovation, resilience, and building businesses that people remember.
As we prepare for our new season, these are exactly the conversations we'll continue having with founders, creators, and leaders shaping Africa's future.
Your turn:
What's another brand people use as the name for an entire category, even when they're talking about a competitor?
Let's hear your examples.
@thenayvuiiiton You're not obligated, however supporting with gas is a show of gratitude.
So please assist with gas. If you were not getting a free ride you'd be spending T-fare.
It just makes sense to convert that T-fare to a show of gratitude. Life no suppose hard o😅
There’s a pattern we keep noticing about the women who sit across from us.
It’s not that they all have it figured out.
In fact, some of the most interesting conversations have been with women who were still figuring things out when they walked through our doors.
Different industries.
Different personalities.
Different definitions of success.
But somehow, the same thing keeps coming up:
They had to become someone their younger selves couldn’t have imagined.
And that's what makes their stories worth listening to.
Because behind the career, the business, the confidence, the applause, there was a woman who once had no idea how any of it would turn out.
Today, we're celebrating a few of the women who have trusted us with that story.
How many of these women do you know? Tag them in the comments below.

Gen Z's how far?
A young Gen Z lady called Tony Elumelu “Tony” at a conference; Guess what he told her:
“You won’t call me Tony. I’m not those boys. I don’t subscribe to that kind of Oyibo life.”
