She says after the shooting he called asking her to vouch for him — instead, she went to the press.

On 5 August 1987, Matthew Broderick was on holiday in County Fermanagh with his girlfriend Jennifer Grey. He was fresh off Ferris Bueller's Day Off and she was about to become Baby in Dirty Dancing.

Broderick was driving a rented BMW on the road outside Tempo, near Enniskillen, when the car crossed into the oncoming lane and hit a Volvo head-on.

The Volvo was being driven by Anna Gallagher, 28. Her mother, Margaret Doherty, 63, was in the passenger seat. Margaret had multiple sclerosis and used a wheelchair, Anna regularly drove her to do the shopping. Tragically both women were pronounced dead on arrival at Erne Hospital.

Broderick came away with a fractured leg, broken ribs, a collapsed lung, and a concussion. He later said he had no memory of the moments before the crash, not even getting out of bed that morning. Grey suffered whiplash serious enough to eventually need spinal surgery.

The legal outcome was shocking. Broderick was initially facing a charge of causing death by dangerous driving, an offence that could have put him away for years. By the time it reached court, the charge had been quietly downgraded to careless driving. He pleaded guilty, was fined £175, and flew home to America. No prison, no further legal consequence, nothing to interrupt his blossoming career.

The Doherty family called the verdict a travesty of justice, and it's hard to argue with them. Two women were dead, and the man responsible walked out of an Irish courtroom for less than the price of a decent hotel room. Broderick has rarely spoken about it publicly since. Grey has called it one of the defining traumas of her life.

Broderick has visited Ireland regularly since the 1987 car crash in County Fermanagh. He and his wife, Sarah Jessica Parker, own a family holiday home in the Donegal Gaeltacht. Broderick spent summers there as a child. He has also traveled to Ireland for professional reasons and is scheduled to perform on stage at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin in a production of "Ulster American" next month.
