Great to have hosted 11 ASEAN member states for our ASEAN-NZ Dialogue in Christchurch last week, and with thanks to Viet Nam as our Co-Chair. #ASEANNZD33
On Friday at our annual senior officials’ dialogue with ASEAN, we were delighted to be joined by Minister of State for Trade and Investment, Hon Nicola Grigg.
Minister Grigg took the opportunity to meet with senior officials from ASEAN Member States including from Viet Nam which Co-Chaired the Dialogue with us and Philippines which holds the ASEAN ‘Chairship’ for 2026.
The Minister was pleased to hear about progress in implementing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership established with ASEAN in October last year.

Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, delivered a public lecture on “ASEAN-New Zealand Partnership: Five Decades of Relations, Cooperation and Partnership,” at the University of Auckland, on 12 May 2025.
SG Dr. Kao underscored the enduring partnership between ASEAN and New Zealand over five decades across the three ASEAN Community Pillars and the ASEAN Connectivity. He also emphasised the important role of New Zealand as one of ASEAN’s enduring partners in contributing to ASEAN's efforts in its community-building process.
SG Dr. Kao also shared that this year marks an important history for ASEAN as it would soon be adopting the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, which is a 20-year vision, and its four Strategic Plans. This year ASEAN and New Zealand also celebrate the 50th Anniversary of their Dialogue Relations.
On his last engagement in Auckland, New Zealand, Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, engaged with members of the ASEAN New Zealand Business Council (ANZBC) during his Working Visit to New Zealand.
The session provided an opportunity to exchange views on strengthening economic cooperation, promoting trade and investment, and enhancing business linkages between ASEAN and New Zealand. Dr. Kao highlighted the importance of robust private sector engagement in advancing the ASEAN-New Zealand partnership and encouraged continued collaboration in fostering sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, started his first engagement in Wellington, New Zealand, by meeting with The Honourable Erica Stanford, Minister of Education of New Zealand, on 13 May 2025, to explore ways to further deepen ASEAN-New Zealand educational ties. Their discussion focused on expanding student mobility including scholarship, enhancing teacher exchanges, and fostering partnerships to enhance capacity building and encourage inclusive and equitable quality education.
Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, was warmly received with a traditional Mihi Whakatau (welcome ceremony) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Wellington, reflecting the hospitality of Aotearoa New Zealand and the strong appreciation for cultural traditions that underpin ASEAN-New Zealand relations.
Today, in Wellington, New Zealand, Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, met with Deputy Secretary, Americas and Asia Group and ASEAN SOM Leader of New Zealand, H.E. Grahame Morton, and othersenior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of New Zealand.
Both sides discussed progress of ASEAN–New Zealand cooperation, noting the recent convening of the 32nd ASEAN-New Zealand Dialogue and the ongoing preparations for the Commemorative Summit on the 50th anniversary of ASEAN-New Zealand Dialogue Relations in October 2025, in Malaysia.
Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, had a lunch meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand, the Rt. Hon. Winston Peters, in Wellington today.
Both sides discussed ASEAN-New Zealand relations, and explored ways to further substantiate the longstanding partnership, especially leading up to the ASEAN-New Zealand Commemorative Summit to mark the 50th anniversary of their Dialogue Relations in October 2025.
Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, today visited the National Library of New Zealand, in Wellington. Established in 1965, the National Library of New Zealand serves to enrich the cultural and economic life of New Zealand and its interchanges with other nations. SG Dr. Kao commended its impressive collection as well as commitment to preserving documentary heritage, academic knowledge and literature for future generations.
Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, today met with the Minister of Defence of New Zealand, The Hon. Judith Collins KC,in Wellington, New Zealand. Both sides exchanged views on the ASEAN-New Zealand cooperation in the defence sector, especially under the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus). Both sides looked forward to meeting each other again in the upcoming ADMM-Plus, in Malaysia, later this year.
Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, today had a bilateral meeting with The Hon. Simon Watts, Minister for Climate Change of New Zealand. Both sides discussed the cooperation between ASEAN and New Zealand on climate action and various environmental issues, contributing to the development of ASEAN-New Zealand Plan of Action 2026-2030, among others.
