A forgotten toy has become Mara's new favorite thing! 🦛❤️

A visitor at Honolulu Zoo accidentally left behind a green and white plush toy. After our keepers checked it for safety, Mara took an instant liking to it!

She's been nudging it around and resting beside it ever since.

Hi, I’m Keeper Shari, and I help care for our ‘anianiau. These birds come from the wild, so we take a hands-off approach to avoid imprinting on humans. Instead, we try to recreate their natural forest environment, fans for wind, plants to mimic native trees, live insects.🌧️🌬️

🍂 Fun fact: Sloths move so slowly that algae can grow on their fur — giving them a naturally green look that’s perfect for spooky season! 🎃
This slow movement and special fur help them blend into the trees, keeping them safe from predators in the wild. 🌿

The Honolulu Zoo would like to send a HUGE MAHALO to our zoo veterinary technicians. Our vet techs are an absolutely essential part of the professional zoo medical team and the state-of-the-art veterinary care we can provide our animals.

This week: Keeper Madeline 🐦✨
Madeline comes from a family of conservationists and bird lovers, so caring for birds has always felt like second nature. As a keeper on our bird team, she spends each day checking in with her feathered residents.

We found you, Bona Lisa!

This spooky season, she’s traded in her haunting for helping—giving our Keiki Zoo goats a spa day! 💅🐐🖤

Turns out skeletons make great groomers (no bones about it).

💀 + 🐐 = Halloween magic at the Honolulu Zoo!

Wow, what a catch! 🐟🐊
Keeper Amelia is serving up a delicious treat milkfish for our gharials to chomp, catch, and devour!
Gharials are true fish specialists — their long, narrow snouts and sharp interlocking teeth are perfectly adapted for snatching slippery prey in the water

Did you know Rusti the orangutan can crack open a coconut with his bare hands—in under a couple of minutes? 😮🥥

Coconuts are tough, but Rusti’s got the skills—and the snack is worth the effort. It’s one of the many clever ways he shows off his strength and smarts! 💪🦧🧡

Our keeper staff shared how animal enrichment plays a vital role in animal well-being — sparking curiosity and creativity in these young minds. Students got to ask questions, explore enrichment ideas, and begin the planning process to research species, understand their behaviors.

[Honolulu Zoo @honolulu_zoo]

You know what that means… melons for everyone!!! 🍉🎁

[Honolulu Zoo @honolulu_zoo]

we spotlight one of the most majestic and endangered animals on Earth — the black rhino.

Here at the Honolulu Zoo, we’re committed to protecting this species through education, conservation efforts, and by partnering with global organizations working to save rhinos in the wild.
