Jafar Panahi is one of the all time greats. White Balloon, Circle and Offside are 3 of my favourite films. His acceptance speech for the Palme D’Or in Cannes: “in the hope of freedom for our country, as soon as possible. So no one can tell us what to wear, and what not to wear… and as cinema lovers, no one to dictate to us what to make and what not to make.”

I don’t often get emotional at film awards but under house arrest for fifteen years in Iran, jailed twice and banned from filming, this is a huge win. Not just for the people of Iran but for humanity ⬇️
