My goal is to ride a bicycle in that silly race next winter. I have a long, long way to go to be ready.
I'll be tweeting about my progress, fitness, and training.
Also, I'm going to be keeping track of my weight loss here. I'm not proud of it, but as of today I'm 290 lbs.
I have so much work ahead of me.
I had a brief period of self doubt, but now...
Now I welcome it!
...(also, they gave us these cool stickers and water bottles)!
I haven't updated in a while. What a busy... two months? Yikes, time keeps flying!
Last week I attended an ITI Training Camp. It was a very valuable experience,
We slept in the snow (in a sleeping bag) each night. We melted snow for drinking water, and mostly camped out.
This camp was very exhausting, physically and mentally. I honestly wasn't in good headspace for most of it, but I've had time to process my experience.
I have a much better idea of what I must be prepared for. And how I must prepare both my mind and my body.
This pic is from a loop around the local float/ski plane base. I've been riding shorter routes that are mostly clear and level, so there aren't a lot of hills or loose snow to muscle through. After that over-ambitious ride last week, I need to gradually improve my fitness.
So... I'm thinking maybe I should get some studded tires for my old 'round-town bike. That way I can do errands and still sorta be training, but not have such valuable machine parked in front of stores.
I have some local errands to run, and I haven't gone for ride yet today. In my mind, I'm thinking, I can combine these two tasks. But, then I remember the bicycle is worth more than my car (it's a mediocre car) and much, much easier to steal, plus it's in higher demand.
I went for a ride last week (and forgot to update).
I wanted to try riding in fresh snow, and it takes A LOT more energy. 15 miles was too much.
Foolishly, I didn't bring any electrolytes. My legs started cramping about halfway through. I had to walk most of the last half.
I would like to add:
I know I'm starting a journey that I'm fortunate enough to be able to afford and have time for. It has been a goal of mine to do this for several years. It's not my intention to gloat or cast shame on anyone because of my luck, privilege, or circumstances.
Say hello to my new machine!
I picked it up this afternoon. I went for an inaugural ride of about 5 miles (before it got too dark).
It was just along the Coastal Trail, but we'll build up to something bigger.
(My apologies for the lighting. The sun sets at about 4 PM here).
I'm long overdue to start using this account again.
While I have done some travel in the past *gulp* seven years, I honestly have not been up to very exciting stuff.
