The Martyrs of the Theban Legion were a body of Roman soldiers remembered in Christian tradition as having come from Thebes in Upper Egypt and having died together for their faith in the late third century. Their story is tied above all to their commander Maurice, also called Mauritius, together with officers such as Candidus and Exuperius. According to the account that took shape in the fifth century, the legion consisted of several thousand Christian men who had been summoned from the East to serve in Gaul under the co-emperor Maximian.

The soldiers were ordered either to offer sacrifice according to the imperial cult or to take part in the punishment of other Christians. They refused, declaring that they would render military service to the emperor but would not violate their conscience before God. Maximian first applied the ancient Roman penalty of decimation, putting every tenth man to death. When the survivors still would not yield, the punishment was repeated. In the end the remainder of the unit was massacred at Agaunum, a place in the Alps that is now Saint-Maurice in the Swiss Valais.

The earliest written version of the tale appears in a letter of Bishop Eucherius of Lyon around the year 450. He reported that relics had already been gathered at the site by an earlier bishop and that a church stood there in honor of the dead. From that center the cult spread widely through the medieval West. Maurice became one of the most popular military saints of Europe, and many local churches claimed companions of the legion as their own patrons. The group is commemorated on the twenty-second of September in both Western and Eastern calendars.

Historians have long debated how much of the narrative can be treated as fact. No contemporary Roman source mentions so large a Christian legion or so complete a slaughter. The numbers given in later retellings, sometimes six thousand six hundred and sixty-six, are clearly symbolic. What remains certain is that the story of an entire unit choosing death rather than apostasy captured the imagination of later centuries and helped shape the memory of Christian soldiers who placed loyalty to their faith above obedience to the state. The Abbey of Saint-Maurice still stands on the traditional site and continues to honor those remembered as the Martyrs of Agaunum.
