She distributed a CIA grant to 130 students who were “very liberal Democrats” to go to two Soviet-backed international youth conferences in the Eastern Bloc. The CIA wanted them there as basically soft power diplomacy with students from the Third World. She said she was never asked to report anything back and she was happy to do it because no private donors at that time wanted to send students to communist youth conferences. A huge reach to call it anything other than naïve.

Also people forget that in the 50s, the public view of the CIA was that it was basically the clean, progressive counterweight to the brutish, reactionary, Hoover-led FBI. All the dark stuff we associate with the CIA’s activities in the 50s and 60s wasn’t disclosed until the mid-70s.
