The historical trajectories of India and Pakistan, both emerging from negotiated settlements with British colonial rulers in 1947, are often encapsulated by the term “Partition.” This transition primarily involved shifts of power between Delhi and Karachi, predominantly affecting the northern regions of the Indian subcontinent. Despite Bengal’s significant contributions to the anti-colonial struggle and the Pakistan Movement, it was marginalized during these negotiations, resulting in its division and incorporation into Pakistan as East Bengal.

East Bengal, later known as East Pakistan, carried forward the legacy of resistance, striving for dignity and rights. Unlike India and Pakistan, Bangladesh did not emerge from a negotiated settlement; rather, it was forged through a people’s war—the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. Bangladesh achieved victory over the West Pakistani Army through an armed struggle, a testament to the resilience and determination of its people.

While Sheikh Mujibur Rahman played a pivotal role in the events leading up to liberation, his subsequent policies, including the establishment of BAKSAL, undermined the aspirations of 1971. This “Mujibist settlement” rendered the nation’s independence and sovereignty vulnerable, obstructing the full realization of the benefits of victory.

In July 2024, Bangladesh witnessed a renewed struggle culminating in the July Uprising, which liberated the nation from the autocratic governance of Fascist Hasina and external dominance. This victory imbued our independence with its true significance, reinforcing the collective commitment to safeguarding freedom and the ideals of liberation.

With this renewed independence, the New Bangladesh aspires to uphold equality, dignity, and justice, ensuring the practice of democracy and the protection of human rights. As the inheritor of the Indo-Muslim civilization and the epicenter of Bengali culture, Bangladesh is poised to continue its civilizational journey, aspiring to become a prominent entity in the Bay of Bengal region and a leading voice in the Global South.

On this day, we solemnly remember the Founders of Bangladesh and all the martyrs of 1971 and the July Uprising.

As a Bangladeshi, I strongly condemn any attempt to misrepresent the history of the Liberation War of 1971 and diminish the unparalleled sacrifices of the people of Bangladesh. The victory of December 16, 1971, was achieved through the blood, sweat, and sacrifices of millions of Bangladeshis who fought courageously for their right to freedom. This day belongs, first and foremost, to the people of Bangladesh, whose resilience and determination broke the chains of oppression.

While we acknowledge and appreciate the role of India in providing critical support during our struggle, it is unacceptable to frame this historic victory as merely an achievement of the Indian military. Such claims undermine the agency of the Bangladeshi people and their fight for liberation, erasing the central role of the Mukti Bahini and the countless martyrs who laid down their lives for our independence.

Mr. Narendra Modi’s statement reflects a deeply flawed and self-serving narrative that distorts history and disrespects the memories of those who sacrificed everything for the birth of Bangladesh. As a sovereign nation, we cannot accept this attempt to appropriate our hard-fought liberation and demand that our history be honored with truth and integrity.

Let us reaffirm today, on our glorious Victory Day, that the sacrifices of Bangladeshis were and will always remain the foundation of our independence. No attempt to rewrite history can diminish their legacy.

We strongly condemn the killing of another Bangladeshi citizen, Anwar Hossain, at the Panchagarh border by the Border Security Force @BSF_India.

This is not an isolated incident. Since Bangladesh’s independence, BSF has been repeatedly implicated in the killing of unarmed Bangladeshi civilians—acts that starkly contravene international conventions on the right to life and the principles of proportionality in border security measures.

Data from Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) highlights the alarming scale of this violence: between 2009 and 2020, 522 Bangladeshis were killed by BSF, with 324 shot and others tortured to death. Human Rights Watch’s @hrw 2010 report, “Trigger Happy”, underscores a persistent pattern of lethal force, with Indian government sources attributing 347 Bangladeshi and 164 Indian deaths to BSF firing between 2006 and 2010. Shockingly, these killings continue unabated, with 34 recorded in 2023, 23 in 2022, and 18 in 2021. These deaths are often defended with dubious claims of combating smuggling or self-defense, in blatant violation of the 2018 accord, under which India and Bangladesh pledged to avoid lethal force in managing border crossings.

This stark reality undermines claims of friendship between the two nations, particularly during the past 16 years of the Awami regime. Over 300 lives were lost at the border during the 2010s alone, a grim testament to enduring hostility that contradicts the rhetoric of partnership.

The Indian government must take urgent steps to ensure its border forces comply with international human rights standards. Respect for the right to life, proportionality, and humane treatment must underpin all border operations. True friendship between nations can only be built on a foundation of mutual respect, equity, and shared harmony.
