This is incrementalism.

They've seen too much resistance to age verification that requires an ID, so they need to take a smaller step people won't reject.

That smaller step is to roll out age verification that doesn't require ID (in this case for 90% of users).

If we accept this, they will have established that they can age-categorize the internet.

Apps like Discord are rolling it out as a test right now; if it works, legislation will follow.

The app enables age-categorization of the internet; the legislation codifies the government's authority to require it.

Once they have the authority to age-categorize the internet codified into law, they are that much closer to an ID-based age-gating/verification system that they will push for next.

Or, another incremental strategy is to make it so that 90% of users don't need an ID right now, then move it to 89%, then to 88%, and so on.

This would reduce the number of affected users, so unaffected users are less likely to leave the service in solidarity with those who are affected, ultimately reducing the backlash of rolling out age verification.

Either way, we're that much closer to having to use an ID to get online.

@notexttospeech You shouldn't be defending Discord if you care about privacy in the first place. Not only Discord is completely proprietary, but they sell their users' data. You should promote Free Software, privacy-respecting alternatives instead, like Jami, Stoat, Mumble etc.

@ColRealPro @discord @svishnevskiy They added an automated profiler based on account signals, which is a better best-case for most people. But the important part is still the fallback—and that still requires submitting personal information (card, ID, etc.). Being profiled isn't ideal either.

Google, apple, and etc. You run your information through them. Only God knows what they are doing with that. It's still too dangerous and risky. Waiting for next data breach to happen
