Our duress PIN/password leaves all of the encrypted data on the device intact. It only wipes keys in the hardware keystores, the secure element and encryption metadata. It's near instant and then it powers off the device to wipe RAM and registers with sensitive data/keys too.

We doubt that's legally different from wiping data. He wasn't being investigated for any actual crime, wasn't under arrest, wasn't read his rights before being interrogated, wasn't under oath, etc. so that's why it was legal rather than a tech loophole which isn't how law works.

It's nearly impossible they'd get anything of value if it was in Before First Unlock with a strong passphrase + 2nd factor fingerprint unlock setup. A random 6 digit PIN would be safe via secure element throttling which they very likely won't be able to bypass for a long time.

It’s the same process iPhones use when you click Secure Erase, they just restart and delete the encryption key so the data is effectively inaccessible.
