The built environment today is responsible for a good majority of emissions and environmental performance inefficiencies. We can only address this issue if we build and operate new better performing facilities, but more importantly, if we up-cycle already existing buildings to meet higher standards of environmental performance.

Keeping and redeveloping older structures also has the added benefit of saving tons of embodied carbon that would've been caused by a total demolition and reconstruction of the building. One of the most successful up-cycling projects to date is Quay Quarter Tower in Sydney by @3XN_GXN, where 65% of the original tower structure and 95% of the original core were retained. These parts of the structure are typically made out of reinforced concrete and steel, which are among the construction materials with the highest levels of embodied carbon.

The renovated building has better performing mechanical systems and better access to natural light and ventilation through the new facade, among many other improvements, that turned it into an energy efficient and more environmentally friendly building, while meeting the needs of the city and its inhabitants, and being an economically viable project for the developer.

When you start a chess game, you have 20 possible moves available. After the first full move (White then Black), there are already over 400 possible positions. By the third move, that number jumps to around 8,900, and after the fourth it reaches nearly 200,000.

By the time you get to move #40, the total number of possible games explodes to roughly 10⁴⁰, a number comparable to the total number of atoms in the observable universe.

Michail Tal, my favorite legend of all time, got reincarnated in the form of one Javokhir Sindarov. Top tier chess is suddenly interesting again.

Potentially another new dominant world champion age (..., Karpov, Kasparov, Anand, Carlsen, ...Sindarov). After defeating Gukesh, and maintaining the title for an additional year after that, we should see him face Magnus for the real showdown. Looking good so far!

Design coordination fails because nobody measures whether the process is converging toward resolution or just generating activity. The difference between clashes found in a model and clashes found in concrete is the quality of feedback loops.

Most BIM managers know their coordination process is failing. They find out at site, 8 months too late. Here are 5 metrics that give you early warning. A thread on measuring design coordination quality.

You do not need all five metrics by next Monday. Pick one. The one that made you think "we definitely do not track that." Measure it for two coordination cycles. If the number surprises you, that is the metric that matters most.
