🤔 We can fight back by acting in a controlling manner, in order to assert a higher level of autonomy

Which can be destructive behaviour

(not suggesting he's doing that)

👉🏼 The theory also tells us that we don't respond well to extrinsic motivators unless we feel confident in our relatedness and the feeling of being in a nurturing environment.

If we do have this level of confidence in our social environment, then imposed rules, don't rob us of our autonomy, instead we submit to them willingly

and in making that choice to submit to a social construct we feel a part of, we are exerting our autonomy.

👿 But without this safe social environment, the rules will feel like they are controlling us, and in order to reassert our autonomy, we will rebel against them.
