I don't get this argument. If you think a subset of fic writers are teeming with unexamined misogyny... why would you *want* them to write F/F? Aren't they self-quarantining? It's so insincere, using the language of gender politics to basically demand ppl write your preference

every time the ao3 statistic discourse comes up it's like 'well you cant force people to write about stuff they dont care about' but that's exactly the issue lol. why DO so many people not care about women to the point where they consider it a chore to write about them

@cogito_yuri At least you're consistent! I think that's the only logical position, if you take those stats to indicate internal bias. I think it's an unrigorous conclusion -- esp how these particular stats are collected & how some lump SEA into "basically white" -- but still, consistent.

@mailboxdove Twitter discourse isn't structured to motivate anyone to change lol. It's just shaming strangers (85% women, per AO3 demographics polling) for their hobby. Fanfic spaces play this same game every month. Nothing has shifted -- suggesting that this method doesn't serve that goal

@Wildfyrewarning yeah 100%. It's such an oddly reductive take. I would happily ignore it, except that it hinges on moralizing women's free time in a way that fkn noooobody does to male-centered fandom spaces. The whole argument requires shaming real women to uplift fictional women. It's SILLY.

@queenofpills The baseline assumption -- that shipping stats reveal a writer's gendered preferences with characters -- is flawed. I would say it's pointless to even debate it. Anyone giving an easy answer is just validating their own biases. It varies fandom to fandom and writer to writer.

@queenofpills That's an uncritical and overly general way to interpret thousands of strangers' hobby writing. Way too many factors involved in what drives someone toward fanfic -- and, beyond that, fanfic is a single data point in someone's creative output. It's tweetable, but shallow.

@francy_sketches That's fair! Everyone benefits from self-reflection & dismantling bias. I just see this devolve pretty often into scrutinizing women (as the majority of AO3 writers) for Doing Fandom Wrong -- and using fanfic as a single data point to define their entire personal politics
