Is writing with authority important in and academic discourse community?

[College Writing @howtowriteU3]

There are many aspects to write with #authority in an academic community:
#Mushfaking
#3ModesofBelonging
#Power
#Ethos
#Genre

[College Writing @howtowriteU3]

#Authority: A quality granted to a person through institutions, which renders their pronouncements as accepted by the community, @Wardle

[College Writing @howtowriteU3]

@Kain_Wardle defines activity theory as people who share a common motive, including the tools that the group uses to achieve their goals

[College Writing @howtowriteU3]

Here are the different aspects of the activity triangle @Kain_Wardle. #Authority can be found almost anywhere

[College Writing @howtowriteU3]

Defined by @Swales, a discourse community must have leaders & knowledgeable, authoritative members. Otherwise it won’t survive

[College Writing @howtowriteU3]

It is important for you to be knowledgeable within the academic discourse. If you have little knowledge, you need to #mushfake effectively

[College Writing @howtowriteU3]

#Mushfaking: A partial acquisition coupled with metaknowledge & strategies to make do, says @Gee. In other words, “fake it ‘till ya make it”

[College Writing @howtowriteU3]

#Mushfaking is used by those who are novices in a community, but is a useful technique for anyone writing in an academic community

[College Writing @howtowriteU3]

She doesn’t have authority, but still acts as if she has knowledge of what is going on. “Fake it till ya make it.”

[College Writing @howtowriteU3]

In order for novices to be successful they need to #mushfake, but you also must fit in. This can be assessed with the #3ModesofBelonging

[College Writing @howtowriteU3]

1st mode of belonging: #engagement, the goals that the newcomers & veterans seek to achieve by building relationships with each other

[College Writing @howtowriteU3]

2nd mode of belonging: #imagination, how a newcomer discovers themselves & the world through their experiences in the community

[College Writing @howtowriteU3]

3rd mode of belonging: #alignment, adopting the ideas of the community, if not, being able to find common ground & broaden your thoughts

[College Writing @howtowriteU3]

Understanding the 3 modes of belonging will help you to find where you fit into the community & whether or not you have authority

[College Writing @howtowriteU3]

You must know your place in your community. If unhappy, it might be a good idea to seek another community where you’ll have #authority

[College Writing @howtowriteU3]

If you aren’t a newcomer & you have some understanding & knowledge of the community, it is important to write with #power

[College Writing @howtowriteU3]

Roger & Janet were part of a study about writing with #authority conducted by @Penrose_Geisler:
Janet=College Freshman
Roger=Grad Student

[College Writing @howtowriteU3]

Janet wrote & read as a newcomer. She took what others said as fact, & showed that she had little authority, her writing lacked #power
