People seem to have goldfish memory so let me break it down:

The actual reason for Discord (and many other social media) to ask for your ID is to monitor and prevent the organization of mass protest against the government.
Just last year the people of Nepal and Morocco were able to organize uprising against their government thru channels like Discord.

Being able to censor and or have the id of people organizing protests would help the government stomp down on future uprising which leads me to believe once the AI bubble bursts, western governments are expecting some giant mass revolt, and in an effort to get ahead of the protest, they want to be able to stop people from organizing by controlling the channels they gather in.
