The soaring cancer rates in J&K are a silent catastrophe, with 80,000 cases in six years overwhelming our healthcare system and devastating families. The recent data is chilling: 14,112 new cases in 2023-24—a 2.7% increase from the previous year. SKIMS documented 44,112 cases from 2013 to 2023, while SMHS reported 6,379 cases from 2017 to 2023. These figures are more than just numbers—they represent the suffering of our people.

Our diagnostic capabilities are woefully inadequate, with only one PET scan in the govt sector. Patients face delays and obstacles in accessing critical diagnostics & treatment. Equally troubling is the absence of a major institutional study to determine the causes of this surge. Suspected factors include sedentary lifestyles, obesity, chemically-infested food items, and cancer-causing dyes like carmoisine and tartrazine used in local foods, spices, and sauces. Food adulteration further exacerbate the crisis.

The govt must urgently prioritize this escalating crisis. Cancer-causing dyes and food adulteration must be checked and banned immediately. We need more diagnostic facilities, better access to treatment, and, crucially, a comprehensive study to identify and address the root causes. It’s a silent pandemic and more dangerous to people at larger.
