For a year or so in primary school we lived in my uncle and aunt's place: brick defence housing, me and my sister on bunk beds upstairs.
I'd wake up early in the morning, lit by the green of a 90s clock-radio, hearing my uncle's heavy boots clobbering past on beige carpet.
High stakes exams might make it harder for students to get genAI to write their essays, but they make it easier for genAI to mark them.
Exams were already a way that academics made their courses more efficient (no feedback).
That's going to bite.
AI isn't a threat to academics because it can do our jobs (it can't) its danger comes from the harm it does to our institutions' primary way of making money: the certification of degrees.
This is not "the value of a degree goes down", it is in the costs of invigilation.
Invigilation is not a specialist skill, and while there might be a little delay as AI cheating tech like wearables catch up to exams, it is a skill easily automated.
That applies to marking too.
When you talk to your students about citation and authorship, about critical thinking and analysis, you're also talking to them about modes of relating to sources and tools.
