Die Saterdagaand voor sy dood het Fourie in die gevangenis gehoor dat hy die volgende oggend teen dagbreek sou sterf. Jopie het gevra vir ʼn tafel en skryfpapier, en hy het vir die grootste deel van die nag briewe aan onder andere sy familie geskryf.

Teen ongeveer vyfuur die Sondagoggend, toe hulle hom kom haal, versoek hy die volgende aan ds. Neethling:

“Hulle moet my tog nie in my gesig skiet nie. Ek het een groot Afrikanerhart: dáár is genoeg plek om my te skiet”.

Toe alles gereed was vir die vuurpeloton, begin sing Fourie Gesang 20 vers 1: “Als wij den doodsvallei betreên / laat wij elk aardse vriend alleen ...” Maar verder het hy nie gekom nie.

Fourie is die enigste deelnemer aan die 1914/15 Maritz Rebellie wat op hierdie wyse die hoogste prys betaal het.

In sy laaste brief aan sy volk skryf hy: "Wees getrou tot die dood. Wees getrou aan jou tradisies, aan jou mense, aan jou taal. God wees met julle almal totdat ons weer sien."
