Today marks the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. As we honor the 1.5 million Armenians murdered by the Ottoman Empire across modern-day Turkey, Syria, and Armenia, we must refuse to let history repeat itself.

In 2020, the military forces of Azerbaijan and Turkey attacked the Armenian population in Nagorno-Karabakh. In 2023, Azerbaijan expelled over 100,000 Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh, continuing the genocidal campaign that had begun over 100 years prior.

On this day of remembrance, we reaffirm the right of the Armenian people — and all people — to freedom, safety, and self-determination.

On this #ArmenianGenocide Remembrance Day, it is not enough to say we have learned from our past or that history will not be repeated because we have already allowed it to do so.

We have stood by over the last several years and watched as the memories of the victims of the first Armenian Genocide were not honoured but rather, their memories were sullied with the ethnic cleansing of the Armenian people in their ancestral home of Artsakh.

More than 100,000 have been murdered or displaced and there has been relative silence from the rest of the world. Today, my heart is with each and every one of them and with every Armenian as we memorialize those who were murdered and brutalized in 1915.

Calling for the respect of sovereignty and territorial integrity after an entire population has been uprooted and subjected to genocide is simply disrespectful to say the least. Canada always seems to say the right things, but only after the damage is already done. A total failure, indeed. We had repeatedly warned Canada and the wider international community that this would inevitably occur if concrete action wasn't taken. Our calls were consistently ignored, as Canada and the global community merely voiced 'deep concerns.' One unmistakable truth emerges from this situation: as long as it doesn't serve its interests, the international community will remain indifferent in the face of even the most blatant violations of international law. Ottawa (Ontario) – L’honorable Pierre Poilievre, chef du Parti conservateur du Canada et de l’Opposition officielle, a fait la déclaration suivante après que l’Azerbaïdjan a lancé une nouvelle opération contre le Haut-Karabakh :

« Les conservateurs sont profondément préoccupés par la crise humanitaire qui sévit dans le Haut-Karabakh en raison de l’escalade des mesures prises par le gouvernement de l’Azerbaïdjan. Le gouvernement du Canada doit soutenir la liberté des habitants du Haut-Karabakh et leur droit à l’autodétermination.

« Depuis l’année dernière, l’Azerbaïdjan bloque la seule route menant à la région, bien que la Cour internationale de justice ait ordonné la levée du blocus. En conséquence, la Croix-Rouge n’a pas pu se rendre dans la région et 120 000 Arméniens de souche risquent de mourir de faim. La famine est utilisée comme une arme silencieuse pour nettoyer ethniquement la région. Un siècle après le génocide arménien, le monde ne peut pas rester les bras croisés.

« Il est clair qu’il n’y a pas de solution militaire à ce conflit et nous exhortons à mettre fin à cette escalade. Nous continuons d’appeler au respect du cessez-le-feu historique, ainsi qu’à la protection des civils de cette région qui ont une fois de plus été attaqués.

« Nous renouvelons également notre appel à l’Azerbaïdjan pour qu’il mette fin au blocus du corridor de Latchine afin que l’aide humanitaire puisse atteindre le Haut-Karabakh. Cette aide est plus que jamais nécessaire et la sécurité des agences d’aide humanitaire doit être garantie par l’Azerbaïdjan.
« Enfin, il est maintenant tout à fait clair que les garanties de maintien de la paix de la Russie n’étaient que des promesses vides.

« Les conservateurs du Canada resteront engagés sur cet enjeu et insisteront sur le fait que le dialogue, plutôt que des actions militaires unilatérales, est la voie vers une paix durable pour le peuple du Haut-Karabakh. »
