Mirror of the Times It is a matter of great sorrow, deep anguish, and serious concern that today, in Indian society, almost every section of the population is worried about its present and future. To protect their rights, people are resorting to protests, demonstrations, sit-ins, and hunger strikes. They are determined to have their demands accepted and, in many cases, are even willing to risk their lives. It is not unlikely that the ruling class may eventually be forced to bow to their pressure and accept all their demands. Dalits, Adivasis (tribal communities), and farmers have already achieved success through their protests. Students continue to protest, and several other sections of society are also considering taking to the streets because of concerns about their present and future. But there is one group that, by contrast, seems completely carefree, unaware, extremely negligent, and absorbed in its own world—as if none of these issues concern them: Even if someone takes away their education, Even if someone takes away their jobs, Even if someone takes away their businesses and livelihoods, Even if someone demolishes their homes with bulldozers and leaves them without shelter, Even if someone takes away their land and leaves them destitute, Even if someone takes away their identity and citizenship, Even if someone takes away their religious symbols, places of worship, and religious practices, And even, ultimately, if someone takes away their faith itself— They neither organize sit-ins, nor stage protests, nor hold demonstrations, nor present a list of demands. Instead, they seem occupied with sleeping for long hours, enjoying delicious meals at restaurants, attending weddings with music and dancing, spending time watching movies, TV serials, and short videos, and wasting hours in idle chatter and meaningless conversations. If only some association, institution, organization, community, or movement would show them a meaningful purpose in life, explain to them a clear aim and mission, give them an ideal to strive for, and organize them around that purpose.
