Is it distinctly different from patriarchal mindset that exists in other caste and religious identities in every part of India? Asking for a friend.

How naïve!

The British government categorised prisoners into distinct classes (Class A, B, and C) based on their social status, education, and the nature of their protest:

The British treated figures like MK Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Sarojini Naidu as “political detenus”.

Revolutionaries such as Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad’s cohort, Shivaram Rajguru, and VD Savarkar were classified as “anarchists”, “terrorists”, or “seditionists”. They were stripped of all political status and subjected to harsher treatment than regular violent convicts.

Primary locations for Congress leaders included: Aga Khan Palace, Ahmednagar Fort, Yerwada, and Naini Jail.

Primary locations for revolutionaries included: Cellular Jail (Andamans), Alipore Jail, and Lahore Central Jail.

Confinement methods for Congress leaders involved structured house arrest or grouped political barracks.

Revolutionaries faced strict, long-term solitary confinement cells.

Labour expected from Congress leaders was minimal, primarily involving writing books, spinning khadi, or reading.

Revolutionaries were subjected to strenuous manual labour, such as tethering to oil presses or making coir rope.

Physical abuse towards Congress leaders was strictly forbidden by high-level executive orders.

In contrast, routine floggings, standing handcuffs, and systematic torture were inflicted upon revolutionaries.

Outside contact for Congress leaders involved heavily monitored letters and periodic visitors.

Revolutionaries experienced complete isolation from family and mainland India for decades.

It is important to note that ordinary grassroots Congress volunteer satyagrahis did not enjoy the luxuries afforded to Gandhi, Nehru, Naidu, and others.

Found the Azad Hind national anthem, and honestly it sounds much better than Jana gana mana.

The lyrics are easily understandable, and does a better job of bringing out that sense of nationalism.

There are songs that carry an emotional history.

Tumne Mujhe Dekha, Hokar Meherban from Teesri Manzil is one of them.

When Shammi Kapoor filmed it, the love of his life, Geeta Bali, had passedon. In his autobiography, he writes of how profoundly that recent loss hollowed him. Yet when the camera rolled, the performer rose above his private grief.

Watching the song today feels he is looking beyond the heroine. He is singing an ode to the woman he loved and lost.

Mohammed Rafi’s voice fused so completely with Shammi Kapoor.

Majrooh Sultanpuri’s lyrics are among the most wistful ever written:

Tumne mujhe dekha hokar meherban,
Ruk gayi yeh zameen, tham gaya aasmaan…

And under R.D. Burman’s lovely composition,the song blooms.

Some performances are memorable because they reveal something the true fabric of an artist who honoured his commitment to his craft, even when his heart was broken.
