Recruitment: Victims are frequently recruited by other victims. Female friends will befriend a victim and then introduce them to the “party scene.” Youth who struggle with low self-esteem, bullying, discrimination, poverty, abuse, isolation and social/family issues are targeted.

83% of 2020 #SexTrafficking cases involved online solicitation, the most common tactic used to solicit sex buyers. 65% of underage victims recruited online in 2020 sex trafficking cases were through Facebook, 14% were through Instagram, and 8% were through Snapchat. #HTinWC

This trafficker employed the “boyfriending” technique. The trafficker at the beginning may give the victim love and affection, gifts, and promise of marriage and a future together. Then quickly pulls away and starts giving mixed messages. #KnowTheSigns

When a trafficker finds a vulnerable teenager, they groom them for sexual exploitation by offering them something they want or need: love, shelter, friendship, protection, drugs, alcohol, money, jewellery, and a glamorous life. #HTinWC #KnowHumanTrafficking

Traffickers are experts in psychological manipulation, so many victims don’t seek help, even if they have the opportunity. These tactics are commonly used by Human Traffickers to manipulate and exploit victims through dependency, coercion, and fear. #HTinWC #KnowTheSigns
