Sen. Erwin Tulfo opposed the proposed Senate amendment allowing videoconferencing for plenary sessions, saying lawmakers should be physically present in work sessions given the daily hardships faced by ordinary Filipinos.
In an interview with ANC’s “Dateline Philippines” on Wednesday, May 27, Tulfo was asked by host Karmina Constantino how the proposal could be justified amid thousands of commuters struggling with a broken transport system and students traveling long distances to attend school in remote areas.
Tulfo said public officials should be grounded on the idea that their authority comes from the people, whom he described as the “amo” or employer of government workers.
He pointed to everyday workers enduring traffic, heat and difficult conditions, stressing that lawmakers should not be working under more comfortable setups such as teleconferencing from home.
He added that it runs against this principle for lawmakers to simply sit comfortably, spend their time online, and work from home, while ordinary Filipinos continue to struggle to report for wor
“Our powers emanate from the public, so we have to respect that,” Tulfo said, noting that workers such as construction laborers endure extreme heat and hardship while earning their living.
“These are the people paying our salaries,” he said, adding that holding Senate sessions remotely from air-conditioned homes is inappropriate. “We don’t need to go to the Senate for session kasi pwede ang teleconferencing, videoconferencing? Kaya nga we objected, nakakahiya!”
BINANATAN SI MARCOLETA
Muling binanatan ni Sen. Erwin Tulfo ang aniya’y “ad hominem” na pagkuwestiyon ni Sen. Rodante Marcoleta tungkol sa legal background ni Sen. Risa Hontiveros.
"You're attacking the individual, 'yung kaniyang character or what. You should attack 'yung kaniyang issue. 'Wag niyang sasabihin na wala kang legal background," saad ni Sen. Tulfo.
“Sen. Hontiveros has been in the Senate for 12 years,” dagdag pa niya.
In 2006 Risa Hontiveros faced off against cops while calling for the ouster of President Arroyo.
This woman has courageously stood up for us her whole life despite the risk and despite the odds.

‘IT’S THE RULES, STUPID!’
In a social media post, Sen. Panfilo “Ping” Lacson fired back at a remark made by Sen. Rodante Marcoleta towards Sen. Risa Hontiveros during the Senate plenary session on May 26, 2026.
Sen. Marcoleta said, “Ito po ang mahirap kasi kung wala po tayong legal background dito,” after Sen. Hontiveros questioned why the majority was pushing for a Senate vote even though the Committee on Rules had yet to be formed.
