Beijing Branch of China Democracy Party on charges of “subverting state power” in Beijing
On March 31, 2026, the Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court, in a closed-door trial, handed down severe sentences to seven members of the Beijing Branch of the China Democracy Party on charges of "subverting state power."
Vice-Chairman Wang Shi was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison, while the other members—Li Wu, Zhao Qiang, Li Yun, Sun Shuai, Li Fei, and Yu Yang—received prison terms ranging from three to seven years, as well as suspended sentences.
These seven brave individuals faced brutal repression simply because, on October 8, 2025, they peacefully established the Beijing Branch of the China Democracy Party near Sitong Bridge in Beijing. They were arrested this past January; a secret trial was held on March 30, and they were handed down heavy sentences the very next day, March 31. The entire case was supervised by the national "610 Office" and directly executed by the Beijing Domestic Security Detachment.
During their founding assembly, they read aloud the China Democracy Party's provisional charter, explicitly stating their willingness to compete and cooperate with other political parties on the basis of upholding the Constitution, mutual respect, and equality. Their stated purpose is "public interest above all, service to the masses," and their guiding principles are "openness, rationality, peace, and non-violence."
Yet, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) could not tolerate even such peaceful, open, and entirely constitutionally compliant acts of association!
Article 35 of the *Constitution of the People's Republic of China* explicitly stipulates: "Citizens of the People's Republic of China enjoy freedom of speech, of the press, of assembly, of association, of procession, and of demonstration."
The actions taken by these seven democrats were nothing other than the exercise of the fundamental rights endowed by the Constitution! Yet, the CCP handed down severe sentences to them on charges of "subverting state power"—an act which, in reality, constitutes the *true* subversion: the subversion of China's Constitution and the rule of law!
From its inception to its suppression, the Beijing Branch of the China Democracy Party existed for a mere five months. This episode not only exposes the extreme fear and brutality of the CCP regime but also highlights the unwavering courage of the Chinese people in challenging the ban on political parties and pursuing democracy!
Beijing is China's capital—its political heart. Establishing a local branch of the Democracy Party in Beijing is an act of profound significance! It serves as renewed proof that the China Democracy Party—founded in 1998—continues to possess a powerful vitality within mainland China! We hereby pay our highest tribute to these seven brave individuals!
We call upon the international community to join in paying attention to this matter, to strongly condemn the tyranny of the CCP, and to continue standing in solidarity with all political prisoners in China!
