In November 2024, 62-year-old Stephanie “Stevi-D” Dowell went to Mule Creek State Prison in California to visit her husband, David Brinson.

Brinson was serving four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole after being convicted of murdering four men. Stephanie had married him while he was incarcerated, and the two maintained their relationship through prison visits.

During an overnight family visit on November 13, Stephanie was found unresponsive inside the prison. She was pronounced dead shortly afterward. Months later, the coroner determined that she had been strangled and ruled her death a homicide.

Stephanie’s family was devastated by her death. They questioned how she could have been placed in a private overnight visit with Brinson despite his history of violent crimes.

In August 2025, Brinson was charged with murder in connection with Stephanie’s death. At that point, he had not entered a plea.

On August 2, 1993, 13-year-old Eric Smith encountered 4-year-old Derrick Robie in Savona, New York, as Derrick was walking alone to a summer program.

Smith lured Derrick into a wooded area near the park. Derrick never made it to the program, and searchers later found his body in the woods.

The investigation quickly focused on Smith. Five days after the killing, he confessed to his family and was arrested.

The case shocked the small community because both the victim and the person responsible were children. Under New York law at the time, murder was one of the offenses for which a 13-year-old could be tried as an adult.

During his 1994 trial, Smith's defense argued that he suffered from a mental disorder and that years of bullying had contributed to his behavior. Prosecutors argued that he understood that what he was doing was wrong.

On August 16, 1994, a jury found Smith guilty of second-degree murder. He was sentenced to 9 years to life in prison, initially being held in a juvenile facility before eventually being transferred to an adult prison.

Smith first became eligible for parole in 2002, but his request was denied. He was denied parole repeatedly over the following years.

During later parole hearings, Smith expressed remorse and said that he had redirected anger connected to the bullying he experienced toward a child who had done nothing to him. He also acknowledged the devastating impact his actions had on Derrick's family.

In October 2021, after his 11th appearance before the parole board, Smith was granted parole. The board cited factors including his disciplinary record, release plan and risk assessment.

Derrick's parents, Dale and Doreen Robie, had opposed Smith's release during previous parole proceedings. After the 2021 decision, members of the Savona community held a march and candlelight vigil in Derrick's memory.

On February 1, 2022, after 28 years behind bars, Smith was released from prison and placed on lifetime parole. His release was delayed while authorities arranged approved housing, and he was ultimately released to Queens, New York.
