Yes it’s September
Yes there is a college basketball game happening
Yes it’s on a tennis court with half the court in the sun and the other in the shade
Welcome back College Basketball
asked Auburn DB Champ Anthony earlier why he decided to stay all this time after his injuries instead of transferring for a reset
he said something Wesley McGriff told him:
"If you treat Auburn right, Auburn will treat you right — and you'll be set for the rest of your life."
Over the last couple months, I’ve had the chance to network with coaches, GA’s, and managers around the country.
The insights have been incredible!
Here’s the best quoted takeaways for anyone on the GA search. 🧵👇
INVEST IN MANAGERS
Student managers at high majors are so valuable to the team, not only from a work standpoint but also with the energy they bring. Often times they are the ones rebounding for players and helping them get their extra work in.
I feel like the more programs can invest in their managers to grow on the development side… it will help their players maximize their extra work and also build better managers.
It’s always driven me nuts that my generation largely created the “too cool to care” slacker mentality. That is a loser mindset. Trying hard is cool. Pushing yourself to be better is cool. Caring is cool. Love Wemby for this.
My best friend passed away last night. His favorite event was March Madness and it was how we became friends. Just check in on your friends this March. Watch ball with your boys. Watch with family. Invite someone you wouldn’t to watch a game. Make some memories this month.
EXTRA POSSESSIONS
This is the only way for an inferior team to win in a 7 game series, barring a major shooting outlier.
Critical for coaches at every level to understand this concept. MOST basketball INNOVATION comes from inferior teams manipulating the possession battle to negate the PPP advantage, like Morey ball, for example.
These are the metrics to toy with schematically 👇
Turnover margin
Pace
O Boards
3 point shot
Shaka Smart, Belmont, Princeton, Rick Carlisle, Kelvin Sampson, Dave Smart, Dusty May, Aaron Fearne, Ben McCollum (and countless others), have all taken advantage of this in some capacity with a TON of success.
It's a foundational, objective thinking point to win basketball games.
@CrumpledJumper
The game plan from Coach SP to pack the paint and completely shut Condon and Micah H out of the game while being significantly undersized is exciting to see. Best scout of the year in my opinion, bet on Florida’s inability to shoot the three and stole a Quad 1A win on the road.
Dang, I’m really starting to like Cignetti. I never did understand coaches bragging about working from 4 AM until 11 PM. Like, in what world is that healthy…or even necessary? Major props to Cig.
I’ll never forget when Coach Napier came to my high school to recruit. I stopped by to meet him. We ended up having a 1-on-1 conversation where he asked about what I wanted do when I grow up and how he could help. He gave me his number and even offered me an internship with the football team. That’s the kind of person he is.
