Huda Elyyan is a 20-year-old medical student from Gaza whose childhood dream was to become a doctor; she worked hard, got accepted into medical school, but has now been forced to postpone her current semester because the family cannot pay the accumulated tuition fees. Her father, 56, suffers from severe heart disease with blocked arteries that require urgent catheterization and stent surgery, along with chronic diabetes that needs constant medication, leaving no money for anything else. Her mother, 52, lives with chronic back pain caused by a herniated disc. The family of seven, Huda, her parents, her 22-year-old brother, her 14-year-old sister, her 9-year-old sister, and one more sibling, lost their home at the start of the genocide and now lives in a worn-out tent that lets in cold and rain; they pay $220 in monthly rent for the plot and have been displaced five times. Four of the younger siblings attend private schools, costing around $80 per week not counting transportation, while the family needs roughly $80 a day for basic water, food, and firewood. Unable to afford a new tent (over $500) or the father’s life-saving operation, Huda has paused her studies so limited resources can keep the family alive, watching her dream of becoming a doctor fade while her father’s health worsens.
