✨ BRAINSTORMING BEST PRACTICES: BOARD GAMES ✨

Pace:

1) The game should have a main thing players do.

2) The thing should be interesting and engaging but reasonably simple (because repetition)

3) Doing the thing should automatically move the game towards a waypoint/ending 👇

4) Players should clearly understand how to do the thing, and why they should want to do the thing well

5) Doing the thing should require little to no planning before a player's turn begins

6) However, the *best* way to do the thing should not be obvious, but available to players that want to put the thought or strategic analysis into it if they so choose

7) This advanced method of play should give players only a slight, but meaningful, advantage over non-strategic players (to keep skill-gaps tight)

8) At the waypoints (usually rounds) the thing should not change drastically, or at all, but instead be strategically altered by the players own actions and/or the actions of their opponents

9) Doing the thing should be fun.. and cool 😎

10) The main tension point should be a (somewhat clouded) risk/reward decision regarding the thing

Setup/Packing Up:

Should match the pace of the game IMO

Fast setup, long gameplay? 🚫
Long setup, fast gameplay? 🚫
Balanced setup and gameplay? ✅

I think a general rule of thumb might be that setup (and put away) time should be roughly between 5-10% of the expected gameplay time. So the setup for a 30min game should last approximately 1.5/3min or so, not more

Will return to this thread if any other random thoughts pop into my head.. 👀
