When https://t.co/zsqlAU06ij refused to sell out to Amazon, the company casually committed $100m to selling diapers below cost. https://t.co/cvWKA32eDA went bust, Amazon bought it for pennies on the dollar and shut it down:

🏦 To understand the eventual fate of Tether you should study BCCI
BCCI was the world’s 7th largest bank in the 1980s…it grew largely from shady practices and facilitating money laundering for drug cartels, terrorists, rogue states etc
BCCI operated offshore, and refused normal audit procedures & regulation.
In later years it was revealed BCCI were also making loans to their own shareholders, using its own stock as collateral (sound familiar? 🤔)
It was widely known they were corrupt, but nobody did anything about it.
It took 10+ yrs of investigations, Feds dodging interference from corrupt politicians, and a massive sting operation before they were brought to trial.
Even after being found guilty, Federal banking regulators still tried to save it from totally collapsing on customers
Ultimately they failed.
Eventually it proved the fraud ran too deep to unwind, their global assets were seized, and the bank went under causing huge global losses.
Some big fines were paid. Some execs went to jail. Some execs got away.
🔑 Lesson: It took a long time, but they weren’t too big to go down…and neither is Tether
In 2017, @LinaKhanFTC - then a third year law student - published "Amazon's Antitrust Paradox," a landmark paper arguing that Amazon had all the tools it needed to amass monopoly power:

Mining is not labor intensive & employs only 1% of labor force. For large Chinese plants, they also import their labor. But even if they didn't, the boost isn't huge as the sector is capital intensive.
So what? Well, Indonesia FDI inflows for manufacturing meager.
In summary, Jokonomics in the next five years means more infra, metals & mining FDI, and even greater dependency on China.
Jokowi achieved a lot but GDP growth was not great (lower than the prev 2 presidents) & jobs could be better.
Export concentration higher via items & China
“But Hamas” is a constant refrain. Previously, my main objection has been that Israel’s genocidal attack has little to do with ending Hamas and the civilian death is unbearable. Implicit was me agreeing that ending Hamas, on its own, would be a good thing. I no longer think that.
Yesterday's $TSLA earnings call was *wild*.
Elon gave investing advice, cited Benjamin Graham and claimed Tesla could 10x from here ($9+ trillion).
You will find all the highlights in this thread 🧵
1. @elonmusk recommends ARK Invest, calling their research "the best":
Alameda claimed to have the 'highest and most consistent returns of any crypto trading firm we know of'
They flaunted 110.6% annualized returns trading $150-300MM per day
Seems legit
Balance in life is BS. To achieve almost anything, there are periods where you have to go all-in and singularly focus on one thing. That's fine. The key is being able to step back when YOU choose to.
Kids aren't soft.
Every year HS coaches get thousands of kids to voluntarily run 60-80 miles per week in the heat of the summer.
When kids care, when the work has meaning & purpose, they will go to the well.
Pointless hard work on things that don't matter decreases motivation
The Arab uprisings of 2011 were both a reminder and a confirmation that "authoritarian stability" is an illusion, if not an outright oxymoron. It's simply not real, and it's a tragedy that U.S. policy in the Middle East is oriented around a fantasy.
