“We paid £80 billion back in PFI debts for JUST £12 billion of assets.”
Private finance is and will always be a rip off and the government must drop plans to reintroduce it into our NHS. #HouseOfCommonsEvent
Indictment of England's children in residential care, mostly corporate controlled.
Annual spend £3.1bn, paid by local councils, spend per child £318,400, 22% profit.
Poor value for money. Children not properly cared.
But govts insist on privatisation.

More obscene "journalism" from BBC News. This is how it reports Israel murdering five journalists in Gaza:
"There's the question of proportionality. Is it justified to kill five journalists when you were only targeting one?"
TODAY'S LESSON ON GETTING CAUGHT OUT AND AN APOLOGY TO @krishgm
Govt claimed yesterday that the £100 billion cost to nationalise the water industry is accurate and that the figures did not come from water companies.
Really? Let's see shall we.
On the 23rd July 2024 Baroness Hayman, Defra spokesperson in the House of Lords, told parliament that "Government have no plans to nationalise Thames Water. It would cost billions and take years". 👇
Lord Sikka @premnsikka promptly wrote to the good Baroness asking if she could "provide the details of that calculation".
Baroness Hayman replied on the 8th Aug 2024 stating "The cost of nationalisation was calculated in a report published by the Social Market Foundation titled ‘The cost of nationalising the water industry in England’. The report estimated the costs of nationalising water companies would be £90 billion," and that a copy could be found on the SMF's website.
And here it is, The Cost of Nationalising the Water Industry in England by the SMF. 👇
As SMF's website highlights the report was indeed "commissioned", bought and paid for by @AnglianWater, @stwater, @SouthWestWater and @unitedutilities the water companies.

This is not business as usual.
My new UN report, From Economy of Occupation to Economy of Genocide, is out today.
It shows how corporations have fueled and legitimised the destruction of Palestine.
Genocide, it would seem, is profitable. This cannot continue, accountability must follow.

Great to see this piece on our #netzero work with @londoncouncils: for many local authorities, any borrowing, should be reserved for statutory responsibilities…National government is in a better position to borrow at scale required to fund net zero, more efficiently. @UniofHerts

A lingering puzzle about inflation is why the public still seems so unhappy about it, even though it has, by conventional measures, returned to normal

In the UK, 4.2 million children live in poverty, with an average of 9 in every classroom of 30. Adequate financial support and policies that help parents balance work and care are essential to end child poverty. @kittyjstewart@Sevilla_Almu https://t.co/5hdzxbDJ1E
Hmm. I agree on the shortage of competent operational management, but that too is a consequence of “new public management” doctrines, which stress generalist, accounting-based and un-specialised management by people sympathetic to simplistic neo-liberal doctrines.
Good see this but technological advances and productivity increases over the last several decades necessitate speedier progress on 4-day week employment https://t.co/ILSfv90HE7
Strange that, when every country claims to be a ‘world leader’ on addressing climate change 😉. Someone must be telling an untruth … perhaps the atmosphere is conning us, or perhaps policy makers & their coopted acolytes are spinning a yarn? Now which is more likely 🤔
More than 100 BBC journalists publicly decry the corporation's huge bias towards Israel and warn that staff confidence is at a historic low.
The media crisis over the failure to report the Gaza genocide is profound, as I explain in my latest article:

Award-winning author Arundhati Roy strongly criticised the US and Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza and Lebanon in her acceptance speech for the PEN Pinter Prize at a ceremony in London earlier this month
