Even after years as chronically ill person, I'm shocked at how well I can hide my symptoms from other people. I feel myself smiling, hear the tone of my voice sounding normal while I'm feeling terrible and I'm still surprised at my ability to. I still don't know how we learn to.
With chronic illness, you normalise so many things most people won't ever feel. You normalise high levels of pain, being exhausted, medical procedures and trauma, needing to rest after a shower. People see you surviving with an illness, but not all you had to normalise to do so.
