Statement Regarding Recent Accusations

Over the past few days, a number of posts have been circulating F1 Twitter about me accusing me of homophobia, transphobia, racism and other forms of prejudice. More recently screenshots of previous posts, conversations and private messages involving me have also been circulated. Since several different accusations are now being grouped together, I want to address them properly and individually instead of continuing an argument through replies, screenshots, and quote posts.

Firstly, I'm not homophobic, transphobic or racist. I don't hate, dislike or look down upon somebody because of their sexuality, gender identity, race or ethnicity. Those are serious accusations to make about somebody and I genuinely find it insulting to have those labels attached to me because they don't represent what I believe. At the same time I'm not going to pretend I've handled every interaction perfectly or that everything I've ever posted has been worded perfectly. There are things I could've explained better, things I've said while angry and jokes that I understand people may take issue with. I want to separate those things from accusations about beliefs that I simply don't hold.

The Claim That I Said White People Are a Minority

One of the original claims made about me was that I'd said white people are a minority. I've never said that white people are currently a minority in the context being discussed. What I've argued is that racism can be directed toward white people, and those are two completely different statements.

I've also come across an older reply of mine where somebody said, “girl you ain't a minority,” and I responded, “The way the world is shifting we're about to be,” later adding, “Think about it though.” I'm not going to pretend that screenshot doesn't exist. I can understand why somebody seeing that could come away thinking I was arguing that straight people are becoming a minority, so I want to clarify exactly what I meant. At the time I was speaking in a speculative and exaggerated way during a back-and-forth exchange, not making some serious claim that straight people are currently, or about to become, a minority.

More importantly, my belief that racism can be directed toward white people doesn't mean I believe white people experience racism on the same historical, institutional or societal scale as racial minorities. I've never claimed that all groups experience discrimination equally. Saying prejudice can exist against a group and saying every group experiences the same level of discrimination are two different arguments.

Heterophobia

Another major part of this controversy concerns my belief that heterophobia exists. I've said this publicly and privately, and screenshots have been posted showing me describing certain things as “heterophobia” and saying that “heterophobia isn't a good look.” I don't dispute those screenshots. In that moment I was joking, but overall I still hold the position that it can and does exist in some form.

When I use the term heterophobia, I mean prejudice, hostility or negative treatment directed toward somebody specifically because they're heterosexual. I don't mean that heterosexual people experience discrimination on anything close to the same scale, with the same history, or with the same impact as homophobia experienced by LGBTQ+ people. Recognizing the history and continuing reality of discrimination against LGBTQ+ people doesn't, in my view, mean that hostility toward somebody for being heterosexual is impossible.

People are completely entitled to disagree with the term or my reasoning. I've got no issue with somebody arguing that I'm wrong about the concept. What I don't think is fair is treating the fact that I believe heterophobia can exist as proof that I hate gay people. I don't. Disagreeing over how prejudice should be defined isn't the same thing as hatred toward the people involved.

Misgendering

Another accusation being made is that I've misgendered people on multiple occasions. I want to be completely clear about this part, I've accidentally used the wrong pronouns for people before. I'm not going to deny something that happened. However these instances weren't deliberate attempts to disrespect somebody's gender identity. When I realized that I'd used the wrong pronouns, I apologized and tried to correct myself.

One of the posts being circulated specifically claims that I “never apologize.” I disagree with that because I've apologized when this has happened. That doesn't mean people aren't allowed to be frustrated with me for making the mistake in the first place. I understand why repeatedly hearing the wrong pronouns can be upsetting or frustrating, especially after somebody's already made their pronouns clear. I've genuinely tried to get people's pronouns right and when I slip up, the right response is for me to correct myself, apologize and make a better effort to remember in the future.

Accidentally misgendering somebody is something I should take responsibility for when it happens. What I disagree with is treating an accidental mistake as evidence that I deliberately disrespect transgender people or hate them. There's an important difference between getting somebody's pronouns wrong and intentionally refusing to respect them, and my mistakes weren't intentional.

Comments Regarding Age and Gender-Related Medical Decisions

Another post references a conversation in which I questioned whether somebody around 14–15 years old could be completely certain about gender-related surgery because of their age. I want to separate questioning whether minors should make certain permanent medical decisions from questioning whether somebody's gender identity itself is legitimate. Those aren't the same thing.

People can strongly disagree with me about the right age, safeguards or standards for certain medical procedures. It's also a very complicated subject involving medicine, parents, patients and individual circumstances, and it deserves more nuance than a Twitter argument usually allows. If something I said during that conversation came across as me dismissing somebody's identity rather than questioning a medical decision then I could've, and probably should've, explained my point better.

My position wasn't that transgender people aren't real, nor was it that transgender people should be deliberately misgendered or treated disrespectfully. A disagreement or question about medical decisions involving minors shouldn't automatically be interpreted as hostility toward transgender people as a whole.

The “Nagasaki” Comment

Another screenshot being circulated shows somebody saying that I was “probably drooling,” to which I replied by calling them “Nagasaki.” They then pointed out that they're Japanese, and I responded by mentioning that people call me “Twin Towers.” There's context behind that exchange which isn't obvious from the screenshot alone.

This was part of an existing inside joke between me and people who regularly make nationality-based jokes and nicknames toward each other. I've been called things such as “9/11,” “Twin Towers” and “Scammed by Google” as part of the same running joke. My “Nagasaki” reply was intended within that existing dynamic. It wasn't a random insult directed at somebody because they were Japanese, and it wasn't intended as an expression of hostility toward Japanese people. The fact these kinds of jokes were already being made back and forth matters when understanding why the comment was made.

At the same time, I understand that somebody outside of that group seeing a single screenshot isn't going to know any of that. Without knowing about the joke the comment obviously looks very different. Saying something was an inside joke also doesn't mean everybody's required to find it funny or acceptable. People can still think the joke itself was inappropriate. What I object to is removing the context surrounding the exchange and presenting the comment as evidence that I genuinely hold racist views toward Japanese people. That wasn't what the comment meant and it doesn't represent how I view Japanese people.

Other Older Posts

Another screenshot shows an older reply where I said, “NOT ALL OF US ARE LIKE THIS.” The screenshot I've seen doesn't show enough of the original context for me to confidently say exactly what I was responding to. Because of that I'm not going to invent context or claim that I remember something I don't just because doing so might make me look better.

If somebody believes that particular post demonstrates prejudice, I'm willing to address it if the full original context is available. I think that's more reasonable than pretending the post doesn't exist or making up an explanation for something where the surrounding conversation isn't currently available to me.

Private Messages

Several screenshots of private conversations involving me have also been circulated. Some show me joking about being “cancelled,” including saying that I “love being cancelled” because I get to write this essay clearing my name. In that same conversation, I explained that I was being sarcastic and that I actually hated being cancelled. Those messages were me privately talking about the situation as it was happening, not expressing hatred toward any particular group.

Other screenshots show me describing things as heterophobia. As I've already explained, I don't dispute holding that position. Another screenshot shows a private message I sent to someone saying that I wanted the rest of a group to “take their hypocrisy and shove it up their ass.” I was angry with specific people who I believed were being hypocritical and I expressed that anger pretty bluntly. It was rude, I'm not asking anybody to pretend otherwise. But being angry at specific people during an argument isn't the same thing as hating an entire sexuality, gender, race or identity.

My Initial Response

I also want to acknowledge the way I initially responded when this started. I was angry because I believed things I'd never actually said were being attributed to me, particularly the claim that I'd said white people are currently a minority. That frustration resulted in me swearing at people and saying that some of them needed to “get a fucking life.”

I stand by defending myself against claims I believe are inaccurate but I don't think responding that aggressively helped anything. I could've made exactly the same points without escalating the situation, and that's something I should've handled better. Being frustrated doesn't mean I can't recognize when my response made an already heated situation worse.

What I'm Actually Apologizing For

I want to make this clear because otherwise this whole statement can easily get reduced to either “he apologized for everything” or “he apologized for nothing.” Neither is accurate. I'm not going to apologize for beliefs I don't hold and I'm not going to admit to being homophobic, transphobic or racist simply because people have called me those things.

I am however willing to apologize for specific things I've actually done wrong. I've accidentally misgendered people. I've made jokes that I understand can look offensive without their context. I've responded aggressively when I was angry. I've worded arguments badly enough that people could reasonably misunderstand what I meant. Those are things I can acknowledge, explain where necessary, apologize for where appropriate and try to handle better in the future.

There's a difference between saying “I shouldn't have said that” and saying “I hate this group of people.” I'm willing to say the former when it's warranted. I'm not going to admit to the latter when it isn't true.

If There's Something Else I've Said

If there's another post, reply, DM, joke, screenshot or conversation that's made somebody believe I'm homophobic, transphobic, racist or otherwise prejudiced, I'd genuinely rather they show it to me and ask me about it. Give me the chance to explain what I meant. If I've been misunderstood, I can clarify it. If I've worded something badly, I can acknowledge that. If I've genuinely been wrong, I can admit that too. And if I've hurt somebody, I can listen to why.

Immediately assigning a label to me and then blocking me gives me no chance to understand what somebody believes I've done wrong, provide context, apologize where appropriate or correct something being falsely attributed to me. I'm not asking people to assume I'm incapable of being wrong. I'm asking for the exact opposite, if you think I've done something wrong, tell me specifically what it is and allow me to respond to it.

Where I Actually Stand

I don't hate anybody because of their race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender or identity. I believe people deserve basic dignity and respect regardless of those things. That doesn't mean I'm going to agree with every person on every political, social or cultural issue involving race, sexuality or gender. Disagreement on those subjects doesn't automatically amount to hatred toward the people involved.

At the same time, good intentions don't automatically make everything somebody says acceptable. If I accidentally misgender somebody, phrase something badly, make a joke that crosses a line or simply get something wrong, saying “I didn't mean it that way” doesn't magically undo the effect it had. I can acknowledge a mistake without accepting a broader accusation about beliefs I don't hold. That's what I'm trying to do here.

Finally
I'm not making this statement to restart the argument, attack anybody involved or encourage the few people who support me to go after them. Don't harass, attack or dogpile anybody mentioned or linked in this statement. I'm including their posts because I believe that if I'm going to publicly defend myself, people should also be able to see what I'm defending myself against. I don't want anyone relying solely on my version of events.

Some of the criticism of me is based on things I genuinely said. Some of those things I stand by, some require context and some I think I could've handled or worded better. Other accusations attribute positions to me that I don't believe accurately represent what I've said or what I believe. I'm willing to separate those things instead of pretending I'm completely innocent of ever saying anything stupid.
You don't have to agree with me, and you don't have to like me. You're completely within your rights to criticize something I've actually said. All I'm asking is that if you're going to judge me, judge me based on what I actually said, the context in which I said it, what I actually believe and how I respond when I genuinely get something wrong, not simply a label somebody else has attached to me.

I'm sure some people will read all of this and still think I'm in the wrong, and that's their opinion. I mainly wanted to put everything I can in one place, give the context I think has been missing and be clear about what I actually believe. At this point I've said what I needed to say, and I'd rather leave it there than keep dragging the same argument around Twitter.
