#reimagined About 1,000 tons of steel and 3,000 tons of cement were used in the construction of the LIC building. More importantly, LIC Building was the tallest building in India when it was inaugurated in 1959 for two years before being surpassed by the Usha Kiran Building in Bombay. In Madras, it held the record for 35 years. It had become the best-known landmark of the city (movies saved pages of dialogue explaining that the actor/actress had moved to Madras just by showing a shot of the LIC building).
On July 11 1975, a major fire occurred in the building. The fire spread rapidly from the lower floor through the AC shafts with the sea breeze aiding it. The entire firefighting resources of the city, including borrowed units from the Chennai Port Refineries and some factories, were not enough.
Twenty four hours of brave firefighting (splinters of glass and molten metal kept falling on the firefighters) was hampered by mediocre equipment and water scarcity. the city was reeling under a water drought
and the government decided to let the fire burn out, whatever the damage. Then someone got a brilliant idea and Water lorries provided by the Corporation were utilised for transporting water from the nearby Cooum River. The water from the river was pumped onto the fire engines and the building saved
No loss of life was reported, but on many floors, there was nothing left except the scorched walls and deformed steel. One of the earliest computers in Madras, a huge ‘IBM machine’ as it was referred to, escaped because it was in the basement. As an aftermath, new rules were formulated for fire-protection measures for the entire city. Post this incident, the fire service got its high rise snorkels.
Much later in one of the wikileaks exposures, it was said that George fernandes a socialist (then in hiding in madras bcause of the emergency police wanting to arrest him) making a claim that it was he and his followers who set it on fire to protest the emergency

As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child, and in the forests of Ramgarh, it took a forest, a railway, and the locals to welcome one into the world. A pregnant elephant lay in labour on the tracks. The forest and railway officials acted swiftly. A coal train was halted for over two hours so the mother could give birth undisturbed. In that pause, a beautiful calf was born. No rush, no harm just a quiet act of kindness. Because sometimes, the most powerful journey begins when we choose to stop 🙂

Val Kilmer has about 10 minutes screen time in Top Gun. That's how good he was. Top Gun was also released just one year after Real Genius, Val moved from goofy teen movies to the coolness of Iceman without even breaking a sweat. He was incredible.

Fifth - after reaching the pickup point, their exit is from tambaram side even for those who want to go north - which is unnecessary drive of about 1.5 kms.

Sixth -that you build or appear to build posh terminals, but terminal exit are barricaded to divert - long walk again.

Third - for those choosing not to use buggy, they have to walk with broken/damaged trollies and push it through slope before the building for pickup point.
Fourth - you mentioned discussion with stake holders - passenger representation was not consulted.

An Olympian struggle: Derek Redmond and his Dad at the Barcelona Games, 1992.

At the 1992 Olympic Games, Great Britain's 400m runner Redmond suffered a heart-breaking injury in the semi-finals as his hamstring snapped. The injury occurred around the 250m mark and crashed to the floor alongside his Olympic dream.

The crowd started to clap and cheer him on. Meanwhile Derek Redmond's Dad managed to jink past officials and get onto the track and catch up with his son 120 metres from the finish line. I'm here, son" said Jim and he put his arm around his son. We'll finish together." Derek burst into tears but the two kept running, kept hobbling towards the finish line. 65,000 people cheered and clapped them on. A few feet from the line Jim let go of his son so Derek could cross the line on his own.

All of the 65,000 continued cheering and many wept as they were part of these very personal heart wrenching sporting moments.
