i've been seeing rounds of vastly undeserved hate for veritasium here, which is so painful to see i have to speak up. the binary brained see vc = bad and unanimously dogpile onto the very few remaining high quality, educational youtube channel, without getting the full context.

he has been working solo for the past few years, and had to give up family time for it. he found a way to sustain the channel without him burning out. this is extremely valid and logical for anyone in his shoes.

you consume the content *for free*, probably using an adblocker and without paying youtube premium, yet you expect him to be able to do the work of maintaining a 10m+ channel pumping out high quality 40min+ videos ON ITS OWN while ALSO taking care of his family. how entitled must you be to have such a blindsided opinion?

Indian Cities: An Impossible Trinity

The "What's the best Indian city?" flame wars are rather funny. All our cities are bad but just in different ways. Some are worse than others.

Unless we recognise the problem, we will not search for solutions. So here is an impossible trinity to make sense of the problems with our cities.

The “impossible trinity” or the “policy trilemma” is a useful thinking aid. The framework is represented a choice among three favourable options, only two of which are possible at the same time. There’s nothing scientific about it, but it can help shed light on the trade-offs involved.

Living in many Indian cities can be represented as a trilemma between these three parameters:

1. A decent standard of living: means that a median resident can afford a dignified dwelling, can commute without fearing death or disability, and can breathe non-hazardous air most of the time.

2. Economic dynamism: means that the place offers a wide range of economic opportunities at all income levels. &

3. Individual liberty: means that a place allows an individual to be herself, where community beliefs do not suppress individual initiative, preferences, and expressions.

Some intentionally broad generalisations follow from this characterisation. Most of our smaller towns offer a reasonable standard of living but no economic dynamism and little individual liberty.

Places like Goa and perhaps cities in Kerala offer a decent standard of living and individual liberty but far fewer economic opportunities.

Cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru offer economic dynamism and higher individual liberty but come at the expense of losing a decent standard of living.

Finally, we have a whole lot of cities which might offer you economic dynamism and a reasonable standard of living, but then they curtail one's basic freedoms - one has to modulate one's own food and drink habits due to others' concerns or look over one's shoulder constantly.
