The earliest known record of a pet with a name dates back more than 3,450 years to ancient Egypt. The cat was called Nedjem, a name that translates to “Sweet One” or simply “Sweetie.”

Nedjem belonged to Puimre, a high-ranking official who served as the Second Priest of Amun and oversaw temple estates and religious ceremonies at Karnak Temple.

The cat’s name appears in Puimre’s decorated tomb at the Theban Necropolis, where Nedjem is shown beneath a chair, a common artistic way of depicting beloved household pets.

The name Nedjem (ndm) means “Sweet One,” “Pleasant One,” or “Delightful One.” It was also used as a personal name in ancient Egypt, suggesting it was an affectionate and familiar term rather than one reserved for animals.

Nedjem offers rare evidence of the close bond ancient Egyptians could share with their pets. Although cats were valued for protecting grain stores from rodents and snakes and were linked to the goddess Bastet, they were also cherished companions.

On August 30, 2015, Jolee Callan and her former boyfriend, Loren Bunner, embarked on a hike along the Pinhoti Trail within Alabama's Cheaha State Park.

Unexpectedly, during the hike, Bunner shot Callan in the head and then pushed her from a 40-foot cliff. This image captures Callan's final moments, which were photographed by Bunner shortly before the tragic incident.

Scientists hypothesize pets will lick and nip at their owner’s face for comfort out of the distress of seeing them unconscious or hurt. Eventually, they draw blood, and instinct takes over from there.

Last kiss: I'll never forget the day my mom called me in a panic ""Janna, you've got to convince your daddy to get rid of that horse, its gonna kill him!"". Major (AKA "Major Deal" as mama named him) was a young and vicious stallion when dad bought him. He ""couldn't be broke"". The men who owned him previously had used a technique to break horses that involved beatings and tying his head tightly between two posts where they left him standing without food or water for 4 weeks. Major stood strong. When dad brought him home, he barreled through five strands of fence within minutes of arriving and he'd Bite and strike at anyone within distance. My dad never broke him.... he earned his heart. Every single day, for hours and hours dad worked to earn that abused horse's trust. Love won and after two full years, Major allowed my dad to ride him. When dad would go out, Major would kiss him on the head over and over. They had a bond that only horse people could ever understand. It seemed only fitting to let Major say goodbye. This is Major's last kiss.
