The suspect in a Florida kidnapping of a 13-year-old girl has died after shots were fired during his arrest, deputies said.
Monday evening, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement issued an Amber Alert for a girl who was abducted out of Ocala.
Marion County deputies said it was believed Jason Castillo, 45, abducted the 13-year-old from her home in the Shady Road Villas community between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
At the time, it was believed Castillo and the victim were heading south in a red Hyundai Santa Fe.
At 5:20 p.m., deputies found Castillo and his vehicle. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said the deputies tried to pull the suspect over, but he fled, leading law enforcement officers to conduct a P.I.T. maneuver to stop him.
Following the P.I.T. maneuver, Castillo’s car became disabled on US-441 near County Road 25A.
However, things escalated when shots were fired during deputies’ attempt to take him into custody, according to the sheriff’s office. Castillo was injured and taken to a hospital for treatment.
The sheriff’s office confirmed later Monday night that Castillo died from his injuries.
The exact events of how shots were fired are not yet known.
At 6:05 p.m., the sheriff’s office announced the victim was found safe. It is not yet confirmed how the minor was recovered safely or whether the child was with Castillo during the shooting.
