@NathanpmYoung Always was. I had this opinion for a long while after realizing that he routinely grossly strawmans positions he disagrees with. Including in his pop science works where he ought to be especially measured and careful.
@TetraspaceWest Yep, it's also surprisingly complex and has way more features than most people know of. There are also alternatives to it like "doas" (which I've been using for the last couple of years). It's a simpler, smaller and originally from OpenBSD, but it's ported to Linux too.
@ulfhammarstrom@foldingmachiner@JoePostingg And this includes not just everybody alive today (which is more than 700 million of humans), but our whole species will go extinct if we stay here as is. And probably much sooner than later looking at the state of things.
@ulfhammarstrom@foldingmachiner@JoePostingg And we consider it worthwhile sacrifice if it helps more people. And the possible upside is survival and flurishing of humanity among the stars. The only real alternative to it is not current state of things forever. Our fate is predetermined - we all are going to die.
@foldingmachiner@JoePostingg Yep, only people who just do not believe the ASI is even possible could disagree with that. If you can grasp even the general magnitude of possible upsides this is not even a question worth thinking for more than a second.
@RadishHarmers@ItsMrManager As long as it instantiates some kind of conscious experience with negative valence - then yes, it will be unethical obviously.
@RadishHarmers Motte and bailey. Just because it may not be considered as bad in this hypothetical (and it's hard to tell by how much) doesn't mean it wouldn't still be considered wildly immoral.
@RadishHarmers This is honestly insane. Is it fine to torture someone for pleasure as long as we have a way to perfectly wipe their memories afterwards and do not harm their body?
@cremieuxrecueil I'm pretty sure that by now sulfuric acid stratospheric aerosol injection will straight up pay for itself ten fold in a very short term if implemented.
@Noahpinion Judging by the public reaction to post-covid recovery and hot economy this will at least burn for good all chances for GOP to control legislative and executive branches for the next decade.
@IsaacKing314 How are all those people so confidently clueless? This is basically Zitron accusing Soares of not trying to slow down the AI labs all over again
@_CLancellotti@xereeto This is only remotely close to truth (and still not true) under a very weird definition of "reductionism". Large plurality of philosophers of mind are physicalists who only accept weak forms of emergence. This is enough to be classified as reductionist materialist in my book
Oh, you're worried about a Jewish guy's apocalyptic cult? You're scandalized that they consort with prostitutes? You think their message of compassion for everyone threatens normal bonds of family, community, and nation? Should we throw you a party? Should we invite Pontius Pilate?
