A street in the city of Segovia in Spain, circa 1904, reveals a captivating scene. In the distance, the renowned Aqueduct of Segovia, a remarkable testament to Ancient Roman engineering, stands proudly. Constructed around the middle of the first century, this aqueduct remains exceptionally well-preserved. Its purpose was to transport water from the Frío River, situated approximately 16 km (10 miles) away in the mountains, to the city of Segovia.
The Aqueduct of Segovia was meticulously crafted using hand-cut granite rocks sourced from the Guadarrama Mountains. It faithfully served the city's water needs for almost two millennia. During this time, the population of Rome experienced rapid growth, resulting in the pollution and contamination of the Roman Tiber River. To address this issue, ingenious Roman engineers designed aqueducts, which played a crucial role in maintaining public health.
Aqueducts functioned by efficiently removing used water and waste from urban areas, simultaneously providing irrigation water to nearby farms. These engineering marvels were built to span considerable distances, with some extending up to 57 miles from the cities they served. The engineers skillfully harnessed the power of gravity to facilitate the movement of water. Freshwater sources were carefully channeled into cities from higher elevations, ensuring a continuous flow.
Constructing aqueducts at the correct angle was vital. If the channel was too steep, water would rush too swiftly, causing erosion. Conversely, if the angle was too shallow, water would stagnate and become undrinkable. Most aqueducts were built underground, taking the form of tunnel aqueducts. However, Segovia's Aqueduct stands as an exceptional example, proudly constructed above ground.
Upon reaching a city, the water flowed into a central reservoir known as a castellum. From there, smaller pipes transported the water to secondary castella, and finally, lead pipes distributed the water to public fountains, baths, and even certain private residences.
Amazon had no idea which #Patriots player to feature on the promo for next week... so they just put Bill Belichick.
Have never seen something like this before😂
@aha_isee And they didn’t even catch him on the way down. How are these people qualified for this seemingly important job and can’t recognize a person who has lost consciousness?
