Abdulraheem Will Get Justice

My attention has been drawn to the deeply troubling news involving the tragic death of Engr. Abdulraheem Mustapha Abubakar, a young graduate of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, and a postgraduate student at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna.

This matter is of grave concern to me. I want to assure his family, the youth of Kaduna State, and Nigerians at large that the Nigerian Youth HelpDesk was established precisely to address issues of this nature where young people face injustice, abuse, neglect, or risk of any kind. I have already activated, through the HelpDesk platform, the necessary steps to investigate and verify what actually transpired.

Following this, we shall engage all relevant stakeholders who are already partners with the Ministry, including the Nigerian Police Force, to ensure that a conclusive and justifiable response is provided in a fair, transparent, and accountable manner. No stone will be left unturned in the pursuit of truth and justice.

While we are working diligently to address this matter, I appeal to the youth of Kaduna State to exercise patience, restraint, and decorum, and allow the processes of intervention to take full course.

Let me use this opportunity to again reiterate that under this administration, no Nigerian youth will be left to suffer injustice of any kind. We are here to listen to genuine grievances and complaints, and to ensure they are addressed in a fair and transparent manner.

Engr. Abdulraheem's tragic death is a painful reminder of why we must continue to strengthen institutions, demand accountability, and protect the dignity and lives of our young people. The Ministry of Youth Development stands firmly with Nigerian youth and will continue to work in defence of their rights and safety.

Engr. Abdurraheem Mustapha Abubakar was a graduate of ABU Zaria, currently working with a construction company in Abuja. Alongside his job, he was pursuing his Master’s degree in Engineering at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna, where he attended weekend classes.

Last friday, 29th August-2025 On his way to NDA for lectures, near Garkuwa Junction, he was tragically killed in an incident involving a Kaduna State Police van. The police vehicle hit the motorcycle (“Okada”) he was riding on, and afterwards, an officer struck him on the head with a heavy bamboo stick (“Kokara”).

Eyewitnesses at the scene confirmed what happened. However, instead of taking responsibility, the police carried him to the station and allegedly made a false statement claiming that his motorcycle had collided with a car, which they used as justification for their actions.

The police, who are supposed to protect lives, ended up taking one in cold blood. This is injustice of the highest order, and we demand justice for Engr. Abdurraheem.

The Tragic Death of Engr. Abdurraheem Mustapha Abubakar and Systemic Police Brutality in Nigeria.

On August 29, 2025, Engr. Abdurraheem Mustapha Abubakar, a graduate of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria and an employee of a construction company in Abuja, was en route to the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna for his weekend Master's degree classes when he met a fatal encounter with Nigerian police officers. Riding as a passenger on a commercial motorcycle (commonly known as "Okada") near Garkuwa Junction along the Kaduna highway, Abubakar's vehicle was struck by a Kaduna State Police van reportedly driving recklessly against traffic.

Following the collision, an officer allegedly assaulted Abubakar by striking him on the head with a heavy bamboo stick ("Kokara"), leading to his death. Eyewitnesses at the scene corroborated this account, describing the police actions as deliberate and unprovoked. Instead of rendering aid or initiating a transparent investigation, the police transported Abubakar's body to the station and issued a falsified report claiming the incident was a collision between his motorcycle and a civilian car.

This attempt at a cover-up has been widely condemned as an effort to evade accountability.

The incident was first publicized on social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), where posts demanded justice using hashtags like #JusticeForAbdurraheem and #StopPoliceBrutality I actually saw mine from a post by @oil_shaeikh had tagged authorities such as the Nigeria Police Force (@PoliceNG) and its Complaint Response Unit (@PoliceNG_CRU), but as of September 1, 2025, no official response or independent probe has been confirmed.

This case exemplifies not just a singular tragedy but a pattern of extrajudicial violence and institutional obfuscation within the Nigerian police system.

Abubakar, described by colleagues and family as a dedicated professional with aspirations in engineering, represents the countless Nigerians whose lives are cut short by encounters with law enforcement, often without recourse.

Eyewitness Accounts and Immediate Aftermath Multiple sources, including social media posts and news reports, detail the sequence of events.

The police van, part of a Kaduna State escort, crossed lanes abruptly, expecting the motorcycle to yield, which led to the initial impact.

Post-collision, the assault with the bamboo stick was witnessed by bystanders who attempted to intervene but were deterred by the armed officers. Abubakar sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after.

His body was removed from the scene by the police, raising concerns about evidence tampering.

Social media amplification has been crucial in preserving eyewitness narratives.

For instance, posts on X and Instagram recount the police's refusal to take responsibility, with one user noting, "The police, who are supposed to protect lives, ended up taking one in cold blood."

Similar accounts on Facebook and Instagram emphasize the falsified police statement, which omitted the van's involvement and the assault, framing it as a routine traffic accident.

These discrepancies highlight a deliberate effort to manipulate the narrative, a tactic frequently employed in cases of police misconduct.

The location is Garkuwa Junction on the Kaduna highway and is known to be notorious for traffic hazards involving official vehicles.

I can remember seeing a post of similar incidents, such as the 2025 crash involving Senator Modu Sheriff's escort, underscoring systemic risks from poorly maintained or recklessly operated police vehicles.

In this case, the van's contravention of traffic rules (driving against flow) directly contributed to the fatality, pointing to a broader disregard for road safety protocols among security forces.
